I have my oven now and am getting close to the point of heat treating some knives made out of W2 bar stock. The plan is to heat treat at 1450 for 10 minutes and then quench with two tempers at 400 (one hour each). Do I need to normalize this steel prior to the heat treat and if so, what is the process. I don't have any anti scale compound. Thanks in advance.

Stock removal or forged? Where did it come from?

I would heat to 1650 for few minutes, cool to black
Heat to 1550, cool to black
Heat to 1450, quench
Heat to 1250 for an hour
Pre HT grind, edge at .040
Heat to about 1200, cool to black for a stress relief
Heat to 1470 (have to check on that for W2)
Quench in fast oil (parks 50)
Temper twice as desired.

Just the way I would do it right now, might be different next week though! It's a journey!

If Warren doesn't mind, I'm sure he doesn't, He is getting above 67 with 1460F and a 5-6 minutes soak, IIRC. He did some sperimentin and arrived at a sweet spot! That was with Aldo's latest bar stock.

Cody, those numbers look really good.
