North Korea Explodes the Big ONE

I think part of the US being an international bulldog of Democracy is that we wanted it. What better way to set up things so they benifit your interests? I think another part was it was expected of us. We had the resources to do so. I think the last part is that no one else was capable of, or wanted the problems associated with, doing it. Most of the European countries have it in their histories just what a headache being a world power can be. They were pretty willing to let us have our turn. We walked right into it.

Not to mention expensive :D

Ponder this:

A Tomahawk missile costs $500,000 and therefore is only fired at high value targets.

Now think that the cost of the war in Iraq is equivalent to firing a Tomahawk missile every 16 hours, non-stop, from when Jesus was born to a few hours ago. :D

I don't see us as the behavior police. That is what the UN was SUPPOSED to do and are FAILING MISERABLY at. This behavior is endangering us and our allies. Should we not be concerned? Additionally, whats wrong with being #1? When the European countrys attained power it was usually through underhandedness, and when they lost power it was because they couldn't stop bickering amongst themselves. We did it through hard work (and kicking Germany's butt/saving Europe's). And just what is wrong with acting in our own interests? We're not trying to take over NK.

Based on the realatively small yield of the test, compared to Hiroshima, it sounds to me much more like a demonstration of a "suitcase nuke" for terrorist customers....a statement "Yeah, we really have one you can buy!" rather than a test of a tactical nuke to use on the south, or on Japan. Just a guess...................................

Okay, North Korea test detonated one of the their nukes. Cause for alarm and concern, sure, but nobody should claim to be surprised by it. Pakistan and others having nukes is worrisome in itself, but what worries me most is not the ones that we know about having nukes, it's the ones we don't know about. No one can convince me that all the nuclear material scattered about central and eastern Europe by the former Soviet Union, has been properly accounted for and secured.
I almost feel, no, in fact I'm pretty sure, that we were safer back in the cold war, when those who did have nukes, knew better than to use them.

Yep.

Well said, Sarge. Well said by all. This is such a complex issue. I just hope that the people who make the decisions make ones that, a generation from now, will turn out to be the right ones.

and the biological weapons the Soviets just left lying around. I saw a report where some anthrax or the like was kept in a fridge somewhere, just waiting to be stolen/used

On a positive note, two Chechen terrorists tried to steal nuclear material and they lasted 5 minutes before dying from radiation.

As historical facts are now up for grabs, with the viewer deciding the outcome, or the current fad, I must agree with the smiley face, if not the FACTs.

Yep unkwown nukes are another scary factor, who knows what out there? to brighten are future in a bright flash one day.

When Britan ruled half the world, we did it with a bayonet in one hand & a bible in the other & gunboats off the coast.

We told the "natives" & each other we did it for thier good, bringing them christianity, education & running water, etc.

We also did nicley on the gold,silver,tin, rubber, oil, teak,mahogany, spices ,opium etc. etc.& of course the sales of arms to are own & allied troops. {sometimes the enemy as well, but hey whats new?}

In life I try & watch out for invested intrests masquerading as moral principles.

Its what great Britan ruled half the world on.

china is going to be the deciding factor on this-they will either kill him or buy him out-they do not want him with nukes-he is a danger to them just as much as us-

personally i think he gets sick and dies real soon-i bet the chinese take him out quietly

It's a complex issue that needs much deliberation.

I suggest we start with watching "Team America" and drinking our beverages of choice.

On a more serious note, the implications are a bit frightening. Especially when ya' live in the only state in the US they say that nutcase can reach with a nuke.

NK is like a wayward child. We shoulda dealt with 'em while they were still toddling around urinating in diapers rather than waiting until they started gettin' all growed up...

Maybe the U.N will take care of it when they send a very mean letter to NK.

proof either that we don't have a team of elite ninja like warriors that can go into NK, and slink around, find the goods, and remove them without anyone knowing... while at the same time making sure the people that made them are quietly encouraged to forget (and taken as well).

or that we just aren't interested in stopping them.

delta force? nah.

and isn't japan required by "law" to never, not once, forget about it, have nukes or large weapons?

Team America dang cracks me up.

"So ronry. So ronry." Kim Jong Il.

Remember who I work for now......

With all apologies; I don't think nuttins funny. The first Cold War and arms race was bad enough. I wonder how many of you had to hide under your school desks once a month?
No. Jokes are good, Nukes in mongrel dog's hand's not.

I laugh alot, especially in times of stress- dealing with dead, wounded, or dismembered bodies, being at an outrageous disadvantage in an altercation, having a Company Commander screaming in my face during Coast Guard Basic training- I've always laughed. Couldn't help it. (and there were times I've wanted to)

I like to laugh. It's part of what I most love about life. Maniacal rulers have nukes, lunatics walk the streets, monsters kill daily without remorse or conscience. every moment of our waking our lives are threatened. Whether we're driving to the grocery store, or sitting at home waiting for the next big earthquake. Any of us could die horrifically of at any moment.

What are we gonna do about it? you can take precautions, and we can keep living, laughing, and loving.

Never crouched under a desk (except during tornadoes) but as previously mentioned, I do live within estimated missile range of North Korea. I'm very well aware of the dire and immediate threat a nuclear NK poses, but you're gonna have to excuse me if I take my son fishing instead of marching downtown with a sign stating that "THE END IS NEAR!" in my hands.

No offense was ever intended.

although now that I think about it that fishing thing sounds good...:D
Maybe I'll go catch a couple trout and let this thread run its course.

Not meaning to make light of the situation Munk. Sorry if I've offended.

the sad truth is that Il really is dumb enough to think that the whole world now fears and respects his demonstrably huge penis.
This guy has a national "Talent show" where girls who match his "ideal woman" put on a show just for him. You can only guess what all that entails.
It's beyond bizarre.

I've seen some documentaries about NK. Man, bizarre is the right word. I watched a "60 Minutes" where they were allowed to go to NK, under close supervision by an armed "guide." Pyongyang is a very weird place. Think another planet. There are these weird traffic police on every major corner directing traffic in a jerky, rehearsed, perfectly timed and repeated set of motions, even when there are no cars. It's their job.

Kids are taught unequivocally that Americans are all evil and should die. They shoot stand-ups of American officers with toy guns. They sing songs with lyrics, "kill, kill, kill" and they believe every word. That's what happens when a dictatorship has been around for a few generations. People, lacking any other reference, believe it. That's part of what's so scary about war with them: we'd be facing a generation who hates us from the bottom of their souls.

Bizarre is right.

LMAO, Danny! Right on.
