Derrick Wulf, Hammer-in organizer extra-ordinaire!

Yep - really outstanding event - my thanks to Derrick and all the presenters. Learned a lot and had a blast. I can hardly conceive of a more ideal setting for a hammer-in and the weekend by any measure was a screaming success. I too hope this will become an annual event.

Roger

PS - Between Derrick's, Coop's and Peter's collections (or portions thereof), this event concluded with a most enjpyable little knife show. To the nice fellow with the Tai Goo knives (whose name escaped me - we need name tags next year) - it was a special treat seeing those as I have seen precious few in person. Coop - your Hill Pearce knives were every bit as stunning in person as your excellent photos suggest - and then some.

I was disappointed I couldn't attend this year...but after seeing that giant picture of Derrick I knew I made the right decision :). It looks like everyone had a great time, good job Derrick.

Matt

Looks like it was a great event. I saw the post with the details and would have liked to have gone but unfortunately yesterday was my Sunday to work!

Maybe next year.

It was a weekend filled with learning and friendships!

Derrick really prepared well, and the karma was delivered back: perfect weather, great attendance, outstanding knife instructors, great food, and irreplaceable camaraderie.

It was a privilege to share info and methods, show off a $75.00 indoor tent in action, and have an attentive audience for almost 90 mins! I hope I was able to convey to a number of folks how easy and important it is to provide good images for the web, or for print and publications.

Roger was right: We also shared some show and tell after the event, and the quality of the wares brought in was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! :p

Thank you, Derrick!

Coop

alot of thank you's go to derrick and all the presenters...it was my first hammer-in....i learned alot from all the presenters and it was my first time meeting any makers in person....i was the one with the tai goo's peter....it was nice to meet you and other collectors there.....it's not too often you get to talk to someone who has the same appreciation for a knife....i mean most of the time...people just don't even know why you would want a knife in the first place....i think i might actually try and make a light tent....coop is very inspiring...even though i didn't understand half of what the hell he was saying....i had to look up aperture in the dictionary!.....it was a great little knife show at the end of the hammer-in....my first time to handle such works of art in person.....knives from makers such as foster, ferry, pearce, lairson, camerer, vitale, white, wheeler, dunn, and many more extraordinary pieces......many thanks again to all who lugged all their customs.......can't wait to actually attend a knife show now!......ryan

Just great photos Peter. Sure would liked to have been there.

That's two great, successful hammer-ins in just the past few weeks. That speaks volumes for the popularity of customs and for the generosity of the guys and girls taking the time and making the effort to put them together.

Derrick, will try to make it next year, if you decide do it again.

Hey! I was there! Good pics!

I wish it was as easy to take pictures, forge an integral, and make damascus as coop, burt, and Joe made it look! It was easy to enjoy Derrick's hospitality, and the company of the interesting group of knife nuts.
I think the program was well thought out, and the setting awesome. I was sure honored to be included.

I also would like to extend my gratitude not only to Wulf, but to all the presenters and attendees alike. Great group of guys for sure. Many new faces along with some old friends. I just amazes me how much can be learned from the demonstrations and just talking amongst the crowd. Definitely worth the trip. Jokes weren't bad either.........

Just to give you guys an idea of what Derrick's back yard looks like:

"Sleepy Hollow" could not be a more appropriate street name - this spot is tranquility defined.

Here is Chris showing the finer points of tooling and carving (I didn't know, before his presentation, that those terms described different things):

His sheaths were AWESOME - I picked up one and ordered another.

And here is our own Coop with his fabulous bladeware, displayed on his favorite background for knife photography. ;)

Information overload once again. Absolutley stellar weekend. Fri. night cocktails greet and meet it was raining steady and I was thinking all we need now is thunder and lightning, then saturday morning out came the sun gods to shine on us. Weather could'nt have been better. Seminars were great! Presenters kept things rolling smoothly and kept my somewhat short attention span riveted. Really enjoyed the casual conversation between the seminars and comparing notes. The one tip I pulled away from this weekend that just smacked me in the back of the head as if saying "stupid" was Dan Farr's handle shaping tip, take your fine sheets of emery paper and put packing tape on the back , then cut it into strips. It'll never tear apart no matter how thin you cut it. That alone is going to save me a ton of paper. A real pleasure meeting all . Thanks Derek, great job by yourself and any help you might have had. Paul

Well I had a lot of fun. The demonstrators were outstanding. Each of them is a world class craftsman and it was clear that they all put a lot of thought and preparation into their presentations. I received tons of great feedback about each of them and they are the ones that made this such a successful event.

And Mace was just great at the green coal forging station. He's a heck of a bladesmith and a natural teacher too. One of the highlights for me was when the father of a young attendee told me how happy he was to see his son having such a wonderful time. Under Mace's watchful eye this young man forged his first knife and couldn't have been happier. He emailed me this morning to tell me he's planning on taking the intro to bladesmithing course in Old Washington. Who knows, he may just be one of the greats someday.

I also want everyone to know how grateful I am for all the help I got from my friends. Matt (MrPurple), his friend Dave, Mace and Aldo all came up Thursday night and helped clean my mess of a shop and set up tents, tables, chairs, anvils, etc. I couldn't have done it without you guys.

Christoph Derringer also came down and helped teach at the green coal forging station. He too is a wonderful teacher and an extremely talented bladesmith.

And I couldn't have asked for a better group of attendees if I had paid them to come. Just a great crew of guys.

Thanks to all of you for making this such a memorable event. Now I just need to convince the better half to let me do it again next year.

Great event!!!! Great instructors, great host, great bunch of attendees and some great scenery. First class event to be my first HI! It's great to meet some of the folks we talk to on here daily and some new friends as well. Many thanks to all who helped make this happen. I realy hope this is going to be an annual thing.

Thanks again to you, Derrick. My offer stands for assistance if you should decide to do this again. I'de be happy to be involved with future plans!!

I had a great weekend. Thanks again to Derrick, the presenters, and the attendees.

(Really blown away by the show and tell at the end too).

It was an increadible weekend! I learned a ton, met great people, had great food, i couldnt have asked for more !

Heck, I even started my very own blade collection this weekend... I can say that my entire blade collection is blades forged by ABS mastersmiths ! However it's rather unique at the moment... in that there are no finished blades =D

I aquired forged to shape blades from Christoph Derringer and Joe Szilaski, and made an attempt to get the unfinished integral that Burt Foster did his demos with =)

Hey, it's a start of a collection, and as a hobby metal worker myself, probably more beneficial to my learning than a completed blade =)

All my images from the weekend are up at

http://www.tharkis.com/wulf07.html

enjoy !

Wow - Justin - that is one seriously comprehensive photo-journal of the weekend complete with captions - well done!

Please post pics of the knives you got - either here or in their own thread. Ipicked up a little integral from Burt - not sure if the larger one went also - I sure wish I had enough cash for both.

Roger

I thought about just trying to get everyone lined up one by one for a mugshot and taking note of their name in my notebook, but it turned out to be more hastle than i was willing to go through while trying to enjoy myself =P
