There are those who know me well and know that I am not a thin blade Scandi kinda guy. I can however be persuaded when I find something that really catches my eye, and has a practical aspect to it. Such is the case with my new knives from Abe Elias (Diving Sparrow Knifeworks http://home.cogeco.ca/~aelias/ ). First and foremost is what Abe is now calling his Northern Bushcraft/Survival (NBS).

This is very similar to the knife that Abe made for Steve Dick and was recently featured in a side bar article in "Tactical Knives Magazine". There were some subtle differences (features)that I requested Abe to add. For example I asked for a sparking rod notch on the thumb rest, and some checkering on the hammer poll for use in scraping out spoons and such. Other than that it is:

Overall Length: 10 1/4" inches
blade length:: 5 inches
Steel: 1095 1/8th inch
Handle material: Orange G-10

I met up with Abe in Detroit where he passed over my new NBS and a surprise another new creation the Savannah Jr.!

The Savannah Jr. is the smaller version of the Bushcrafter that I had ordered last year which Abe now calls the Savannah. Here's the two of them (Savannah and Jr.) on either side of the NBS.

Although I haven't had a lot of time to test it however I must say it slices, it dices, it even shaves seasoned walnut!

The tomato was fresh from the garden (and a mite green). All the slices were made by alternating push cuts and pull cuts. The NBS literally dropped through the tomato with the slightest pressure. I noticed today that its beginning to develope an interesting patina from the tomato cuts.

The Savannah Jr. is a cuttin' little machine as well (just like its daddy)...

I have to say that I am well satisfied. Now the only question that remains is, which one do I carry during hunting season???

You got that right. That Savannah is just about perfect.
I'll need to see if he can turn one out in A2. Thanks for bringing these to my attention  .

The Savannah is a great knife. Mine is made from ATS-34 and cuts like a demon. Last year while cutting steaks for a large gathering I went through 50+ lbs of steaks cutting them two at a time. Sirloins were no match for the steel. Over a year later it has been stropped once, but has yet to need to see a stone.

Abe routinely has A2 on hand so give him a call or drop him an email.

I like that quite a bit. Looks like a good all around size and shape for all kinds of fieldcraft chores. 1095 is a great steel for it too, nice and tough but easy to sharpen.

Thanks guys. I have been very impressed with the edge holding ability of this particular piece of 1095. Excellent grind and heat treat. Abe can fashion them out of other metals as well such as ATS-34, A2, or about anything else he can get. Plenty of handle choices as well. I just happen to like the looks of the orange G-10. This same knife in Green Micarta or even a nice hardwood like spalted maple would be stunning.

I love that orange! Just a beautiful, bright color. You're not going to lose that in the grass.

Those are fantastic knives....OH boy...what are you guys doing to me...2 more knives for the collection..:D

Hey JJ, I also have a M6 scout in .22 hornet but it shoots several feet high at 100yards. How well does yours do with the scope? Im thinking of getting a scope for it but am worried that I will have trouble shooting at birds in flight. How do you like your set up?

Hey Guys...

JJ...

Yaa those knives are nice..

Abe's knives have really come along nicely in the past year or so....

Nice blades no doubt...
His leatherwork is looking pretty nice as well...

Wade - The red dot scope works well with the 22 LR. With a rifle that shoots as far off as yours (unless you are willing to seriously tinker with the fixed sights) a scope may be the way to go. I haven't shot mine much at anything over 50 yds away. I am going to reset the zero of the scope this fall for 410 slugs. It will be interesting to see how that goes.

Thanks for all the postitive comments guys. These are fantastic knives, I continue to be amazed by what they are capable of.
