Northfield or Tidioute

About like deciding on whether to buy a Lincoln T/car,
Mercury Grand Marquis, or Ford Crown Vic.
Same basic platform just differences in vinyl top grain, mouldings,
tailight swedge, long pull or shortpull door handles, wheels, and
hood shield, I mean ornament.

Northfield is easier to say & spell than Tidioute ;)

Gota say I learned a lot from your post guys
ie slanted bolsters, pinched bolsters, long pulls, swedging handle materials

Just go's to show how unobservant I am about the finer details.:o Heck I looked at the photos on the web sites, and said hey I like that one! and that was it. Now I'll take a closer look when buying, long pull or no long pull, swedge or no swedge, that is the question? :p

lol your right about that :D

I have a bunch of both and as usual .... I like the better materials of the Northfields and the lack (in the main) of swedging on the Tidioutes

If they ditched the swedging, it'd be Northfields all the way for me

Here is what the customer service at GEC emailed me when I asked about their different brands:

Dear Sir,

Our Tidioute and Northfield Un-X-LD knives are both made with 1095 carbon
steel. The fit is the same on both brands, the finish on the blades of the
Tidioute are satin and the finish on the Northfield Un-X-LD are polished.
We normally put the more expensive handle materials such as jigged bone,
burnt stag, abalone, mother of pearl on the Northfield Un-X-LD brand which
is our high end brand and the Tidioute is our workingman's brand which will
have jig bone, acrylic, and wood handles. The Great Eastern brand is our
only brand that the blades are 440C Stainless Steel. The fit is the same as
the other two brands and the blades are polished. We normally put American
Elk, Burnt Stag, jigged bone on the Great Eastern brand. Hope this info
helps you and if you have anymore questions feel free to e-mail me. Thank
you for your interest in Great Eastern Cutlery.

Can someone direct me to a seller of Northfield knives. I haven't seen them where I have looked but I do have 3 Tidioute knives and like them. One section of my collection deals with different handle materials, Christmas Tree, Corian, etc. and the first Tidioute I bought has beautiful candy red acrylic scales. Any direction appreciated. aryfrosty@msn.com
Thank you.

I tend to like flat grinds over sabre (and other, less slicing-friendly grinds), but darn those Northfields are pretty! Only one I have is a Tidioute toothpick, though.

I e-mailed to you good seller. I advice bit caution how to put e-mail on forums though I suggest oputting e-mail addresses way sniffers and spambot scanners can't identify them like someone(a)something.com or someone (at) something.com or someone@something*removethis*.com. That will save your address from huge amount of spam.

The Great Eastern Cutlery website has links to dealers, many of whom display excellent photos of the knives on sale.

I very much look for and closely at swedges and prefer Northfield models.

This is great information and part of the reason why this site is such an excellent resource. Thanks for the education, gents!

I'm solidly in with the goat herder. Northfields all the way because of the swedging first, fancy stag and bolsters as well.
I only buy Tidioutes for the specific handle material. I sure wish they made Northfields with the burnt grizzly cut bone.
