Northwoods D2 or GEC 1095 for whittler

Thanks for clarifying that Derrick--so far I am leaning toward 1095.

Hey guys, what about 440c as an alternative? Canal Street Cutlery has a 4" Serpentine Stockman that looks nice.

OK guys, what do you think of the GEC #61 Congress (four blades). It looks like that might be the one I'm going with (River blue wave jigged bone, because my little boy loves blue and I'll likely pass it on to him).

For me that would likely be the deciding factor. If one of my boys likes it, I'd buy just so I could pass it on to them. Good luck deciding... So many choices.... Shiny.... Pretty...

Yeah, a large selection of fine things you enjoy can be dizzying... but so much fun.

But with disrespectful and blasphemous answers like that, do you think GEC will ever listen to him?:D:D

As far as D2 vs. 1095, I really like the edge on my various GEC's in 1095. Myself, I'm looking at the 33 conductor whittler. I have average sized hands, so the larger whittlers don't work as well for me. I used a Buck 303 Cadet for a while to whittle with, and it worked fine. Plus, the conductor looks just a touch longer, which is okay.

Good luck with your decision.

John

I'm nothing if not honest. ;)

Actually, I'm working on making my GEC a better carver. Just put an hour into (re)thinning the blades and putting a zero grind on them. They didn't rub before (it really is a quality knife!) but they sure as heck don't now. :D

I'll be posting pics and the whole story in the Workshop forum thread.

I saw that you were working on your #57 (if I read correctly) and look forward to seeing what you've done. Likely going with the #61... still a little thinking to do before I pull the trigger.

Btw, I love the idea of buying a knife with the idea of passing it down. I've already got a couple of knives earmarked for just that, however, I'm not sure I'd choose a knife as specific as a carving knife based on its color. Favorite colors can be a fickle thing over a lifetime, but ergonomics are for life. Well mostly.

Anyway, whatever you choose, remember that you can modify the blades (to a degree) if you find a knife that you love, but that the blades aren't perfect on. I'm reading up on it right now from a book that a good friend sent me. The carver uses SAKs exclusively, but he modifies the blades (and cuts off the keyring thingy) to suit him.

Yeah, I think that I was going to go with the pattern anyway--the blue is just a bonus. I intend to pass down my custom 110 too, but that one was designed to my liking ;) I think I saw the pics of the modified SAK... the pen blade was turned into a sheep's foot--it looked good.

That's one I definitely want to try someday. I have the 2 blade version, which I like, but I'd like to see how the full congress compares. Plus, with all those blades, it just begs for some modding! I'd definitely want to turn one of the sheepsfoots into a wharncliff...

Strig - sounds like you've been busy - look forward to hearing about it!

OK guys, I went with the #61 mentioned above... I'll post an up-date when I get a little work done. Thanks so much!
