Good day everyone,
im thinking of pulling the trigger on a smooth white bone Northwoods Hawthorne. I understand the Hawthorne is made by G.E.C.? Now are some Northwoods made by G.E.C. or are all of the Northwoods made by G.E.C.?
I want one made by G.E.C. but I think some are not?

does anyone have any pics of the hawthorne> and lastly, is the blade shiny on the Hawthorne? KSF says they have a rustic finish but I cant tell by the pics if they are shiny or already have a type of patina on them? whats the rustic part?
thanks in advance.

Don't have a Hawthorne but I have the Burnside which has an identical blade treatment. The flats retain the scale from the heat treat process and this creates the rustic look. The grind and spine of the blade are satin polished. I like the look but some might not.

Not all Northwoods knives are GEC made. The Indian River Jack is made by Queen but I do believe the Hawthorne is produced for them by Great Eastern. You can reach out to Derrick Bohn or the rest of the KSF crew if you want to be certain.

The Northwoods Hawthorne is made by GEC on their #48 slim dog leg pattern frame. The blade finish is "as forged" on the upper flat side of the blade, which also has a distinctive deeply stamped NORTHWOODS mark. The rest of the blade has a satin finish rather than a high polish. Choice of Wharncliffe or clip point blades.

Here's a shot of the blade on mine. The grind and swedge are finished. The flats are left with the heat treat slag, for the rustic look. I think it is a pretty cool look :)

That is very nice! so are All Hawthornes are made by G.E.C.? or the newer ones?

Trand, that's is awesome, and thank you for the info. the blue camel bone is very nice. do the blades come centered?

I believe all the newer models of the Northwoods line except the Indian River Jack are made by GEC. The IRJ is from Queen. I'm not sure who was the manufacturer of the vintage Northwoods. They were back stock acquired when KSF took over the line.

You can't go wrong with this line. I have a few, and they are all great (Hawthorne, IRJ, Norfolk, Norfolk Whittler, Presidential). I can't wait for the ones not in my grubby little mitts to arrive as well (Fremont Jack & Madison Barlow).

Yep, all centered. I don't remember having an issue with blade centering at about 90 #48s now.

Oy... wowsa... I am not much on having a knife come to me that is to look as if it has had years of use, years of work, years of carry, and on a on. I think the kids used to call them "posers".

But that knife transcends all of that in my book. That is just a gorgeous piece of cutlery, done just right. NICE knife!

Thinking about recasting my birthday gift from my family as I am typing...

Lots of great pics. I've been swamped with our move. The info above is accurate. These are all made by GEC.

Hey guys,
Can the wharncliff version be pinch opened? With my lack of nails I usually have to stick with single blade lock backs or longer blade slippies (or modern one handers but they're less ok at work) I've got a GEC huckleberry boys knife that's just about perfect for comparison. I really appreciate any incite as it'll save me having to ship another back to Derek.

The wharncliffe blade protrudes high enough out of the covers to easily grip and pinch it open without much trouble. Even with a fairly strong pull, this shouldn't be an issue.
