So Black Ice is great paper, but hard to get ahold of (IME anyway).

I bought some from EMI at a real reasonable price ($31.99 for 320X and 600X, 50 sheet reams of 9X11), but by the time they shipped it to me the cost was pretty damn steep.

The "local" auto paint supply shop that I have always bought Mirka from does NOT have Norton products on their shelves, but I asked about it anyway.

A phone call later and they have a ream of 1000X and 1500X on the way for me.... $28 each for a ream of 50 sheets!!! The best price online I have found for 9X11 sheets in this grit is EMI and they're like $45.89... and that's BEFORE shipping charges.

So don't underestimate your local auto paint shop... Amazing what a little human interaction can generate. :)

Good to know.

I recently began purchasing all my sanding sheets from the auto parts store. They are considerably cheaper than the hardware store I was getting it from. Good idea about asking for non stock items though.

Wow , 50 sheets , man at 1 sheet per knife , you are good for 50 years !

;)

That's just mean. True, but mean. :D

I've never heard of Black Ice. I'll have to try it. I have noticed the price difference between hardware stores and everywhere else...

Sheesh.... tough crowd! ;) :)

I know some folks don't notice a difference in papers, but I feel like the Black Ice cuts very nice and smooth.

But paper, like belts for me, are more about quality of cut and finish than life. I have never found a paper or belt that will work for 100 knives.... but if it's something that will help me get a better finish, I'm all for it.

I know sandpaper only goes to 400 in South Carolina :p

But I like the high grit stuff for clay hardened blades. If they're not clay hardened... they stop at 400-600, Mr. Jedi Alligator Spearer Knight. :D

great find Nick. I get most of mine from an auto paint supply place but they do charge a little more for the finer grit stuff so I buy that from a machine tool store. they charge the same for all the grit sizes but are farther away so I just stock up when I need end mills or surface grinder stones.

I went from Klingspor, which is pretty darned good stuff, to Black Ice and yes, there is a noticeable difference, even to a non-anal retentive hack like me who plans to make more than 2 knives this year......notice that I gave Nick a bit more benefit of the doubt than previous posters who said he would be lucky to finish only one knife, albeit a VERY nice one, in a calendar year. :D

Is there a noticable dif between norton blue-bak and the black ice? Cause I use the blue and the finish is very uniform.
