Norton or McAfee antivirus?

Norton also does automatic updates. I use NAV for both home and office without problems.

I would recommend getting a spyware scanner as well (adaware, spywareblaster, etc...) They remove alot of the "junk" that clogs up computers these days.

I spent 4 hours the other day cleaning out a friends laptop. In addition to the 8 viruses he had, there were over 250 pieces of spyware. It was so clogged up that the minute he connected to the internet, popup windows would appear continuously.

Whatever you get, make sure you select automatic updates and keep it current.
 
I personally find the home editions of both Norton and McAfee to be pretty bad. They screw up a computer as much as they help them.

Network Associates McAfee Virusscan Security Suite v4.5 is very good. It's the business version of the McAfee antivirus, and 100 times better than any home version antivirus. It has a very small and simple, yet powerful footprint. Highly recommended.
 
Thanks for the AVG tip :D ! I have Norton in my primary OS (XP) but I also occaisionally run 98 (for ESL games and proofreading, as it works better with my Japanese keyboard). As I only occaisionaly go online with 98, I couldn't see forking out the money for a second Norton (I had it and it has expired). AVG really fits the bill :) .
 
I downloaded AVG. It rocks! It found some problems that Norton didnt find. I cant believe it is free.

I recommend trying it for those that haven't yet.
 
Dennis, I've had both Norton and McAfee on my home computer. Also, our Department uses Norton anti-virus and firewall for it's principal data base and it has proven to be very effective over-all. Therefore, given that your question was limited to these two options I would go with Norton.
 
I've used three of these. McAfee was just plain incompetent. I suffered viruses nearly daily when I was using it. PC-Cillin is a good one but I could never figure out how to schedule scans. The stupid thing insisted on scanning the system 15 minutes after I started work for the day. I had to get rid of it. Norton AV is the way to go from my experience.

Thanks for the link to AVG! I downloaded it today, ran a check, and it caught a couple items that Norton didn't catch in it's full (updated) scan yesterday!

So, so far, AVG looks to be the best.

Mine has caught several that Norton didnt catch. AVG even caught a virus in my system volume information folder (thats the folder that XP uses to store restore information. Seems better than Norton and .... its free!!!
 
norton is a memory hog

i dumped it for AVG, & have not regretted doing so.

don't forget sypbot search & destroy & Trojan Hunter
 
I've been using AVG for over a year. Our company switched to the Network Ver 7 and everyone likes it better than Norton Corporate and we've had less downtime. Just keep whatever you use updated daily, if possible..

Yes, AVG works great. Been using it for the last 6 months or so. It's efficient, intuitive, and small in size comparing to the Norton and McAfee.

I have never tried AVG, but I ve used norton and mcafee and of the two, norton is a much better choice IMO. Also, i use spybot:s&d for spyware removal.
