Would any of you fine gentlemen give me some info on this axe? It looks to never have been swung. I found it in my grandpas tool shed, hanging behind 40 layers of other stuff... It's a homestead jersey with measurements of 36" overall, 7" head with a 5" cutting face... Anything would be helpful.

Homestead is a Collins line. As far as I know all the Homestead's were made in the US. Should be a great axe.

The handle is a 36" hickory, but has the edges squared off like a octagonal DB handle has. Do you think that the handle is original to the head?

On the flat sides, is it the same thickness the entire length including the swell (kinda like it was cut out of a piece of dimensional lumber in that thickness)?????

Id love to see a pic of the handle in its entirety.

Ive got a chunk of seasoned hickory laying around waiting to be shaped to a jersey but I haven't figured out a pattern yet. Any ideas?

M3mphis, here's a pic of the handle... Any idea of how old this may be?IMAG0363.jpg

Hello Broady....What a great find. Obviously I don't know your age. Is your Grandpa still living? I never had a Grandfather. They both died when both of my parents were very young. (only children). I have ten grandchildren (so far) so try to be an ok Grandpa. When I'm up there swinging 'steel on hickory' there should be an axe or two down here for each of them.

That's neat to have your 'Grandpaw's' axe. I have a Kelly of my Dad's (RIP) obviously it's my favorite.

regards...Frank

Broady, that looks like a straight-up octagonal handle to me! In which case, I doubt it's original. An octagonal handle is not a perfect octagon, it's elongated like yours.

My grandpa gave me an axe and a splitting maul a little while back. It's a very special thing, indeed. I told my son that I will give it to him when he's older. He's only four but he already has a small grasp on how special it is to have his great grandpa's axe.

Frank, it sounds to me like your an awesome grampa! BTW, I've wanted to visit NZ since I was a little kid and my grandparents brought back pictures! ;)

HELLUVA FIND!

i dont think its a jersey though. more of a baltimore/kentucky IMO...

Learning new things everyday on here... I always thought that any head with the pointed ears was considered jersey. Thanks bearhunter.

They are. It is that it just might be a baltimore Jersey, a Kentucky Jersey, or any other combo you want to come up with.

you dont know what the hell your talking about... its not a jersey...! the blade is too long for it to be a jersey...
kentucky... there is no such thing as a kentucky jersey...
kentucky is a pattern all its own..., but some do call it a baltimore...;)

I'd call it a baltimore kentucky. The line from the haft to the heel is not flat enough to be a straight kentucky, but not sloped enough to be a jersey. Don't doubt me, I'm right. ;)

That's a sweet find Broady. That axe is going to be very nice. Are there going to be cleaned up pics with some wood choppin action?
