NOS Homestead Jersey Found in Papas Shed

That's a sweet find Broady. That axe is going to be very nice. Are there going to be cleaned up pics with some wood choppin action?

I want to leave it as unique as possible, but do have an urge to get the rust spots off of the head and lightly sand the handle and oil it up. It's more of a sentimental thing, even though its not top notch material, so I would like to hang it next to our fireplace instead of using it... Don't castrate me fellas...

They are. It is that it just might be a baltimore Jersey, a Kentucky Jersey, or any other combo you want to come up with.

you dont know what the hell your talking about... its not a jersey...! the blade is too long for it to be a jersey...
kentucky... there is no such thing as a kentucky jersey...
kentucky is a pattern all its own..., but some do call it a baltimore...;)

i somehow feel that we have pissed operator off???:D

I am open to discussion on this, if you are. Thanks.

I am fairly familiar with soaking in vinegar to remove rust and things of that sort, but how would you fellas tackle the rust spots on the head to bring it back to life? I don't want to remove the handle, so i was thinking of cutting the vinegar in half and soaking a rag in half vinegar, half water and laying it over the head for a day. I don't want to lose the sheen of the head. Any suggestions?

That head is in pretty great condition. You may want to try some light mineral oil and a soft rag or a gentle plastic type scouring pad before you try vinegar which will change the nice natural patina the head already has. Should clean up nicely with oil.

I agree. The next step after that, if necessary, could be a brass wire brush.

I've done a rag in full strength vinegar just laid on it and got a decent result in a few hours, though that may also have had something to do with the steel of the head in question.

Hmm ... rounded heel and toe, with a bit that flares up at the toe, could be a North Carolina pattern. ;)

Yup, its an axe. They are usually used to cut wood. Thats what I use mine for. Your mileage may vary.

;)

Clearly even back in the heyday of the axe there was not a consensus on pattern names as it varies somewhat by manufacturer.

So this is where the big bang came against Bearhunter - who was just trying to get under my skin - just happened to be he picked a bad time - which is no where near his fault.

I edited the original post, but it said that everyone on here is an expert. That is not true. No one here is, let alone me. We are all learners, and that is better.

Bear - I apologize man. Sorry. Forum - I apologize. Unaccepatble.
