I am new to knife making, just getting my forge finished and would like to start with this 5160 steel for my first knives. But I can't find a nose chart to verify what the books I have read say about heat treating this steel. Has anyone got an online ref for this chart?
Thanks
Allen :D

Allen , it's not a 'nose chart' it's a Time -Temperature- Transformation chart [ TTT Curve]. If someone can't get a copy I'll look ,I might have one.

5160 is an alloy steel and the nose is pretty far back. If you quench in most any oil you will be fine. I never heard of anyone missing the nose on 5160.

Thanks for the replys. I knew it was a Time-Temperature Diagram, I called it a nose chart to try and sound cool:p . In my copy of the $50 knife shop there is a Time-Temperature Diagram on page 71 it is not labeled as 5160, but that is the steel talked about in the book so I thought it must be it. I would like a copy just for my own education.

Thanks Again for the help

Stacy, that's a Continuous Cooling Transformation Chart [ CCT] .I've always found the TTT more useful than the CCT.

If you'll go to Ed Caffery's website, there's a really good sequence to follow when using 5150.

I believe this is the TTT diagram that you were looking for. It's from page 200 of my copy of the Heat Treater's Guide. I have also posted pages 198 and 199, as they contain additional info that you might find useful.

mete, thanks for the point out. I had it archived under TTT due to the chart's title.Should have looked closer. I ,like many others, often refer to an IT as a TTT. The term TTT can be several different charts, one of them is the IT.
As you said, it is easier to read the IT.
Glad we have you to keep us straight.
