I am from the vintage group that got the Boy Scout knife as my first. I don't know if mine was marked or not, but it was American Made and sold proudly branded "Montgomery Wards". My Dad had a knife when he was a little kid, so he gave that first knife to me when I was the age he got his, 5. Couldn't take it anywhere, could carry it around the house and in the back yard.
One day I trimmed my Mom's rubber dish drain board and of course I was found out. Dad LIT ME UP and lectured me long and loud about using knives improperly and destructively, and took the knife back. I was regifted the knife when I turned 6 with the same supervisory rules. When i was in Scouts and got to work to earn the Totin' Chip I was allowed to carry it anywhere. That was the only nice knife (only knife?) I had until I turned 10 and Dad bought me a 4" stockman.
I still have the Scout knife and it still opens and closes, but is really a lot worse for wear. That's because it is 56 years old... Yikes! A veteran of too many camp outs, hikes and adventures to count, but probably the thing that caused the most wear was that I learned to free hand sharpen on stones with that knife. And the first stockman and many after that is long gone, but I still have a love for that pattern I can't get over. Most of the time I still carry one!
Burning memories....
