Nostalgia- you first knife

A "sharpfinger" with sheath was the one I remember as a "real knife" although my brother and I had owned different $3 hardware store Barlows by that time. All through Junior High and High School I traded knives, it's odd how it wasn't a big deal then to buy a knife or bb gun off another guy, you just put it in your locker and shut up about it until you took it home that night or took it to your car if you had one. It wasn't explicitly against the rules then, of course, nobody then would have dreamed of doing anything stupid.

The one that kickstarted the whole disease was a Buck Spitfire. A knife that introduced me to backlocks and one-hand openings. Also the knife that introduced me to disassembling knives. Still haven't put the little guy back together again.

I am from the vintage group that got the Boy Scout knife as my first. I don't know if mine was marked or not, but it was American Made and sold proudly branded "Montgomery Wards". My Dad had a knife when he was a little kid, so he gave that first knife to me when I was the age he got his, 5. Couldn't take it anywhere, could carry it around the house and in the back yard.

One day I trimmed my Mom's rubber dish drain board and of course I was found out. Dad LIT ME UP and lectured me long and loud about using knives improperly and destructively, and took the knife back. I was regifted the knife when I turned 6 with the same supervisory rules. When i was in Scouts and got to work to earn the Totin' Chip I was allowed to carry it anywhere. That was the only nice knife (only knife?) I had until I turned 10 and Dad bought me a 4" stockman.

I still have the Scout knife and it still opens and closes, but is really a lot worse for wear. That's because it is 56 years old... Yikes! A veteran of too many camp outs, hikes and adventures to count, but probably the thing that caused the most wear was that I learned to free hand sharpen on stones with that knife. And the first stockman and many after that is long gone, but I still have a love for that pattern I can't get over. Most of the time I still carry one!

Burning memories....

I think my first knife was a flea market special. One of those Pakastany fake Buck 110’s. The lock didn’t even work.
My first real knife was a Swiss Army Knife with leather sheath I got for Christmas one year.

I won a boy scout folder at age 7 or 8 for selling candybars, I think. It wasn’t the top prize, obviously. But to me it was the coolest. I also got a handful of silver dollars, if I remember correctly.

My first decent knife was a Kershaw leek...now I have 6 of em lol
My 1st really good knife was a ZT 0452, which is funny because I bought a 0450cf on amazon and they sent me the wrong knife by accident....and I loved it. I often wonder if I would’ve kept collecting if they had sent me the 0450cf in the first place, because I like the 0452 line 10x better.

Wow, what a coincidence, I was just thinking about creating this same thread last week when I was thinking about my first knives. The first one I was given was when I was in Cub Scouts at probably 7 or 8 years old, and was the standard Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts knife of the time. The first knife I purchased myself was when I was about 10 years old and is a Queen Cutlery #82 fixed blade. I gave this knife to my son about a year or two ago. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

I don't remember when or how I got my first knife. Or for that matter exactly what it was. I don't really remember not having a knife. I know I had a knife when I started school. My older brother remembers getting his first knife when he was 5. It would seem reasonable to assume I got mine at about the same age. The knives I remember having as a child, were inexpensive stockman pattern knives made by the Imperial knife Co of Providence RI. I went through a number of them. When I lost one a new one could be had for 99 cents. So my best guess is I got my first knife when I was about 5 and it was an Imperial brand stockman. And this was about 1961 or 62.

O.B.

My first quality blade was a Spyderco Delica with the molded plastic clip. It's a nice blue color and have had it ever since. I purchased it at a garage sale for $2 as I recall. To this day, I haven't gotten a better knife deal!

My first "real knife" was a Case XX 323-6 fixed blade my Dad sent me from Viet Nam in 1965. I still have that knife today in perfect condition.

My first knife came out of a bunch of Bazooka Joe bubble gum wrappers you saved for prizes. Late 70's I was maybe 6 or 7 years old. Was a white fake pearl plastic 2 blade pen knife and long gone.:(
