Most of the knives I have seen had the blades welded onto the handles with a clear weld line so they are an accident waiting to happen.

I have seen the same knives but to be honest the weld is stronger then the blade stock so you have nothing to worry about. This goes for most any weld done properly. The weld will be stronger then the material that is welded. I am in no way endorsing a fake or copy just pointing out a fact about properly welded joint.
 
I have seen 2 that were tested by a forum member in Taiwan that broke at the weld line. You do make a good point about welding though and you also make a better one using the word "properly". :)
