Not a salt pot, but a Borax pot

Hi, I have been twist welding 1.5" x 3' cables in my forge with good success.

The pieces are hot, large and awkward. Dragging the cable out of the forge to twist it is not fun. So I thought of creating a verticle forge where I could do the twisting without taking the cable out of the forge.

A stainless tube inside a verticle forge, with the tube filled with Borax. Question is can I get the Borax itself hot enough to transfer the heat to the submerged cable?

Could I get some feedback on this question. Thanks

Im not an expert in forges but wont the stainless tube get weak at that temp?

I would be concerned about the container myself, I would recommend a Ceramic Crucible but I am not sure if that would hold hot borax. What you could do is preheat the billet and then dip it into the hot borax, maybe if you had a large enough forge.

If I understand what you're thinking, you want to heat your cable to something like welding temp in a borax bath.
I'm pretty sure borax won't do what you're thinking here. I can't think of any HT salts that will go that high.

I don't think I'd prefer a liquid medium that hot anyway. Maybe some kind of argon -filled canister or something ...

Why not just have an opening in both ends of your forge and build a figture so that the cable is held at the far end and you can twist it at your end. A long spoon shape piece of say 410 stainless would allow you to flux it in the forge. A piece of inconel pipe would probably put up with the heat (get your wallet out) but, I doubt the boxax would last long. I would make a hell of a welding setup if it worked

Gene Osborne has a good video for weldind cable, In it he shows how he set up his forge w/ a small hydraulic jack at the back so he can "pinch" the cable and twist while in the forge. He still takes it out to flux. Shawn
