Got your attention, didn't I? ;)
Seriously though, I have never been a Spyderco fan but, after reading a lot & talking a little bit on these forums I decided I'd give one a try (mostly because Sal seems like a hell of a nice guy). So, I dug deep in my pockets & spent a whopping $13 on a Byrd Meadowlark. When it finally came I was pleased by the weight & over all feel of the knife but a little concerned about the placement of the lock but, shrugged it off. Unfortunately the knife came so dull I doubt it could cut a fart but, after a short run on my Sharpmaker it was flinging hairs off the back of my hand so I laid aside my BM Grip & pocketed the Meadowlark.
Definitely a lower profile knife & lighter in the pocket.
At any rate I just returned from a week long fishing trip in the Outer Banks of NC and had taken my Meadowlark with me. The first evening I went to prepare dinner I noticed there was no knives in the house save for some junkie steak knives & a bread knife so I whipped out the Meadowlark to prep dinner with (first I used it to slice a lime for my Sol beer ;) ). I had no problem mincing garlic with the knife, cutting veggies, or cubing/trimming meat. The realtivly flat edge made chopping a non issue save for the small area (hey what the heck I'm not complaining it's not a kitchen knife). The next day I took it out with me to cut bait, 50lb test shock leaders, and the rest of the tasks knives do when fishing. Evenings I'd wash it off & again it would prep dinner. After a week of salt water & air and one night of being left out with lime juice all over it, I notice no corrosion. It was a little dull when I returned home but a couple of licks on the Sharpmaker & I was happy with the edge again.
Now, I wouldn't say I'm ready to shelve my Grip, but the Meadowlark has certainly earned itself a place in my pocket. I think I may get myself a Delica now & take that for a spin. Just goes to show that being a nice guy can sway some of us pig-headed folks into trying something new & different.

Welcome aboard and enjoy your new knife. Amazing the quality and performance they put in such an inexpensive knive, huh?
Well, you had your Byrd, I suspect you'll head towards the real thing in the not so distant future. They say those ZDP / CF Calypso III are... err, decent :foot:

Decent my Aunt Fanny!!

Dialex knows better than that! I've been a devotee since '83 and I have yet to be disappointed by any Spyderco product.

(BTW the Caly III in any form is one fine daily carry. I'm not biased at all....)

Chris:) :) :)

You will love the delica. I suggest picking up the delica wave.

I just picked up a new one in the category are looking for, a black ZDP 189 Calypso Jr. for $66.10 shipped lighthound.com the unreinforced scales on this model are a little bit lighter duty than the new Delica but I think the ergonomics are much better, and many of us prefer the flat ground blade which is something spyderco does very well. I do not have much experience with the frn "plastic" spyderco's but supposedly spyderco Frn tougher than your average fiberglass reinforced nylon.

Ill vouch for the CJr ZDP. its great and at 66 shipped, a little better deal than I got. It is a lighter duty, more precision knife than the Delica or Native but it makes up for it with its shear stupidly sharp edge and flat grind. I carry mine daily.:)

My biggest problem with Spyderco is there are far too many great models that just NEED to be used. And my biggest regret about buying all these Spydies is that I can't carry and use them all...

I just dug out my Delica today and I forgot how much I liked it. I picked up the SPOT and Endura before it, but it was really the Delica that made me fall in love with Spyderco. I think it'll do fine as a first Spydie. :)

We know a guy who routinely carries 12-20 Spydies daily...so I guess you just need more pockets. :D

Hmm, you're probably right. That means I could carry ALL my Spydies! I can't imagine what I'd say to a LEO if I got stopped, though. :barf:

He happens to live in NYC...but he is a LEO defense trainer so he might get some extra consideration. :D

I have felt similar to EvilGemini.
Never been over fussed on the Spyderco design and the large section that surrounds the Spyderhole.
After all the positive feedback on these forums and seeing the owner of the company get involved directly in many threads I decided to give one a go.
Received my Byrd Cara Cara today.
I realise its an economy model but I could not be more impressed.
Top quality fit and finish, razor sharp, I think I may have to invest in a few more products from this company.
