Not all honing compounds the same?

I have Black Green and Pink compounds at home - and ordered some Black and Green compounds while on vacation.

They are VERY different in composition.

The first set I have look to be the kind you can find at any Home Depot - they are a little more waxy and do not have much silica grit to them.

Then I got the BRKT compound (which, of course, BRKT doesn't make) and it had much less waxiness to them, needed heat to rub in well to the strop, and feel and sound more gritty.

Both work, ofcourse, but, I like the BRKT better. They seem to work faster, leave a slightly toothier edge, and get your knife plenty sharp in a quick amount of time.

Anyone else want to weigh in on this? Am I just drunk?

That's just crazy talk. Everybody makes everything the same in my world.:p

Its true compounds can vary a lot that's why I use diamond compounds.

I like to just use a slip of wet dry 1500 on an oiled blade and then strop the blade on the leather. Some of the grit of the sandpaper that has adhered to the blade is impregnated in the leather.

I have the same experience. But one is with Lowes green compound and the other one is HF green compound.
The Lowes is darker and waxier. The HF is lighter and harder. The HF one works faster but for that same reason I keep thinking the Lowes green, since it removes less metal, would provider a smoother finish. I don't know if this is the case but it makes sense in my head.

Interesting.

In the sticks I sometimes have a small container of PJ to accelerate fire. One day I went to what if and wound a good amount of powder that was rubbing compound [doh, left lid off it dried out] from an auto store into it. Sets a fire as good as ever and works on a strop. Toofa 1

I have found a stick of gold compound at the local woodworking store. It has given the best results I have found so far. It just seems to polish the blade more efficiently.

I'm onboard with boobies, too. They're not very good for honing steel ... but who cares?

Where do you get your diamond compounds?
Scott

The best stuff is the spray by handamerican but I don't think they make it anymore, come to think of it I can't find any handamerican products :(

Next best choice is Amplex found at http://www.classicshaving.com/Razor_Strops_Hones.html near the bottom of the page.

Last would be the DMT diamond paste mostly because of its low carat count (works the slowest) but because its oil based it works great on my leather belt for my 1x30.

I know for me Rick, when I get confused, somehow everything turns into boobies.

Great, protourist, but ... well ... there are boobies, and then there are boobies (not that the blue footed boobies aren't cute, too).

If you have any questions feel free to PM.

I know that Jantz supply alone carries four or five different green compounds, so I know that they are not all made the same.

I went ahead and bought the Bark River when I finally bought a knife specific compound, and haven't been disappointed, but I don't have anything to compare them to.
