Not enough Makers?

Customs aside, there's not really too many companies making balisongs these days. Bear, Jaguar, and Benchmade are basically the only readily ones readily available. Oh, and of course, the China cheapies.

Has anyone ever considered manufacturing balisong knives? Perhaps filling in the gap between $25 Jaguars and the $130 Benchmade. Is a quality balisong with stable pins for about $65-80 feasible?

Just a thought.

The "Gap" you are talking about are the Japan made Butterfly knives. They were VERY nice knives that sold in the Jaguar - Bear price range. I have been thinking that I would like to look into getting some made. But right now, I have a shipment of Filipino Bali's being held by customs. I put together a "administrative" appeal to get them back, and I will want to see how that goes. If you want to see a copy of the letter I wrote to the customs Port Authority, here is where I put that file: http://members.xoom.com/expojohnr7/customs.doc Thanks, JohnR7 (on ebay) Yes, Ebay makes us list butterflys with 2" blades, but that don't mean we can not sell full sized balisongs and butterfly by email. That was exactly what I was going to say, there are some nice Filipino balisong's out there. Actually JohnR7 has a very nice selection of them and different types of butterfly knives.

I htink there was a thread out there once abou hthis.. the reason there is no gap right now is mainly because US companies are afraid of making hem because of laws. and no way a custom maker can go that low. Mike turbe from 1sks is planing on designing his answer. less than Bm more than a jaguar he says

JohnR's knives are very nice! Go for the Jap models man! Hope things work out in customs for you. Things are quite the same here.

Catch you on the flip side!

Does anyone one know if Taylor is still alive. He was the one that was importing the Japan Butterfly Knives about 12 years ago. Maybe I could talk to him and get a few pointers. I just found out, that you have to talk to customs, before you try and bring something in. The last thing you want to do, is to try and work it out with them, when it is sitting on the dock. You got to get it all worked out with them, before your shipment ever gets here. Thanks, JohnR7 WWW.BalisongKnife.Com

I am aware of two companies planning to introduce high-quality standard-product balisongs in the under $100 price range this year.

One is our gentle host here at bladeforums.com, World Of Weapons and OneStopKnifeShop.com. I've talked to Mike about his plans and they are ambitious and exciting. He's got some very good ideas and I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with.

The other is...
well...
I'm sworn to secrecy.
