...hopefully! ;)

We picked up a AMK SERE VII tonight, and are now only 2 of 16 SERE models out from finishing 'that' collection...

We're also getting very close on our 'One of each' RMK collection...and I now have the info needed to help finish off our 'Evolution of the Applegate/Fairbairn Fighting Knife' collection...

So, I'm wondering, how many fellow forumites are building a collection with specific goals/knife types in mind?

Say, something like a collection of 'One of each' MDK ATAK's, Busse 'Steel Hearts', Remington Trappers, Marble's 'Ideal's', certain makers, or...well, you get my point...

The reason I ask is, I have this odd idea that such a collection is more esthetically appealing than a 'hodge-podge' of nice knives...and I'm wondering if anyone here feels the same way, to whatever degree.

Another reason I ask is because, to stay 'true' to the collections, a person will need to pass on other beautiful knives almost every day...and that's tough, tough, tough...

Anyhoo, thoughts, anyone?

Mel

(And yes, for all the BS I put out, my wife and I actually DO collect knives...lol)

I mostly collect CRK Sebenzas, and have a decent representation of how the knife has evolved over the years. I also have a good number of frame-locks from other high quality makers, notably Darryl Ralph, Tom Mayo and Ken Onion.

Hi,

I go for the IXL/Wostenholm pocket-knives, particularly the old ones - they always look like they have had an interesting life!

Try to limit the colection to Chris Reeve and Randall. But that does not stop me from picking up other's to trade to feed my habit, usually older Sheffield stuff .I like finding these but have no wish to hang on to them.
Also have some other odd's which are just too good to move on , Al Mar , Gerber and the like.
I could weaken for a touch of Mayo with my collection.

I collect Case Eisenhowers. My goal is to own every one. It should be an easy collection to complete since it is a relatively recent introduction, but it really isn't. I'm still missing a couple of versions that I know about and there may be some that I don't know about. I think the current count on the collection is 19 knives. The Eisenhower was introduced in the mid 1990's as an equal end pen with the Eisenhower signature etched on the blade. There have actually been a surprising number of them issued. I even own a mint condition sample of the original equal end pen from the 1940's from which the Eisenhower was taken. Still I can't seem to complete the collection. Take care.

I collect Stag, folders and fixed, custom or production.
I like too many styles of knives to focus on one, or on one pattern of slip joint. I had a thread a while back asking what I was missing from my collection.

Although my PhotoPoint album is gone, I still have all of the knives (around 20 pieces). I have stag for my next four customs, and I'll be using custom makers after that who have a good supply of stag. Of course the embargo on stag makes finding new stuff hard, luckily there's enough stag knives on the secondary market that I'll never run out of knives to buy.

Just the opposite, actually. I'm trying to pare down my collection, getting rid of the good users that I never use. I don't like having a bunch of knives around that should be used but aren't. I find selling them off a tough go, though, because they're hard to move even at absurdly low prices. Strange.

Sheldon,
I have quite a collection of W.D.Pease knives. On the factory side I collect Case trappers and Case Collectors Club knives,Kabar dog heads and new Camillus offerings.
By the way I mailed you a little gift on Saturday so check your mail later this week.
Good Collecting !

My collecting runs in two veins - the first is a collection of Spyderco Worker variants including Spyderkeys. I started with this because the Worker remains my favorite Spyderco knife and my favorite blade shape. As I acquired more of them, I decided that they would be my little museum of (as mentioned by st. james re: Sebenza's) the evolution of the knife and its materials.

Other than that, I keep it flexible, but except for a couple of user knives, I collect knives that represent an array of folding mechanisms and organic handle materials.

...I'm glad that I'm not the 'only' one...lol

I've seen some great collections, yet sometimes walked away thinking, "But, but, where was the symmetry?"

...Received the packet just before the Eugene show, thanks buddy, great old catalog prices and pictures from Jess Horn...nice stuff all!

Edna got a real kick out of it too!

The best part of it all was that Jess came by our hotel room Sunday morning at 8:30 to drop off her newest Horn folder...we showed him the catalog and prices...and all got a good laugh out of it! :)

Jess also told us some stories about you too buddy...lol Man, you were a 'bad player' back then eh? :D :D :D

Funny thing is, those two get along fabulously, like two peas in a pod!

Anyhoo, we need to talk soon...

Thanks again,

Mel

I started out as a fisherman looking for a decent knife...now I got so much hardware on me when I go fishing I "clink" when I walk :D

I now accept the fact I am hooked on knives when I passed on buying a great new fly rod so I could save up for a new knife

My main interest is talonite/ stellite blades... no rust... good blades for being around water...main pattern interest is small utility/ bird and trout knives

I collect a very strange combination of 'users' from all sorts of different companies. I have noticed that lately I have been bit by the slipjoint bug, so I am starting to lean in that direction now....

I think I'm out to collect a 'good' one of each...
Bowie, hunter, utility...
Somehow I've gotten more than one each of those and yet to get the fillet, slipjoint (whole new can of woims there) and dagger and...well you get the idea ;)
Melvin,
Have you seen the Cutting Edge list this week? There are some AlMars there...don't know if they are what you're lookin for...might be worth a peek :)

I've decided to limit my knife collecting to "things that are sharp".

Sheldon,
I'm glad you received the catalog and had a good laugh with Jess.
Don't beleive any of the stories Jess told you because they are probally true and they make me look bad. Remember that was 1986, 16 years ago when I was young single and crazy. Now I'm just crazy !
Good Collecting!

I just collect what appeals to my aesthetic sense. Trying to do it any other way means buying things that don't appeal to me, they just have different printing on the blade, or whatever.
