Not just another lame ass 'What do you collect" thread...

I've got a pretty good collection of Emerson Customs going. There is the run of CQC's, Vipers, and Fixed Blades that are the standards. The expensive part is the varriations, as well as the early Pre-tacs!

I seem to have a weakness for pairs of knives.

For example, whenever anyone makes a 3/4 size version of a folder I already own, I'm pretty much forced to buy it.

I also have a run on pairs of knives from the same manufacturer where one is single-edged, and the other is double-edged.

I also seem to collect two of my favorite knives. One is to carry and use. The other is to preserve in its perfect state for the duration of my life.

There was an article in Knife World a while back. More like a poem by the title of I Never Met A Knife That I Did Not Like. I can identify with that.

I have been known to pick of pretty much anything that I can afford and like. My collection is like a meandering spoked wheel that gets out of alignment on occasions. Now keep in mind that I am an old (olfactory mal-presence) and that I have about as many factory and custom using knives that a sane person needs (and I keep buying one or two a year. If that tells ya somthin' :D).

The general directions of the spokes when the wheel is aligned:

1. Art daggers and folders that I should not be buying :). These are thought out commissions to folks I have gotten to know. They take years rather than months from the point of talking about it to finished knife. That way I have time to save up for them.

2. Multiblades - Very partial to Doctor's patterns and whittlers with split (and tapered) backsprings. Sunfish run in there at third. I have been messin' in this area since I was a kid and the knives vary from turn of the century antiques (other than the Sunfish) to modern factory and custom versions of these three patterns. Problem here is that I like multiblades and am libel to pick up whatever strikes me if there is some 'disposable cash' laying around. Older multiblades in good or better shape can be amazingly well made knives that are great to carry and use at the least. The meaning of scary sharp can easily be found in a well sharpend carbon multi blade. It may not last long, but we are talking scalpel like.

3. ABS Smith Damascus Bowies and Daggers. (I am beginning to lean towards antique type patterns) My dream knifes in these categories are a Hancock Price type California Bowie and a Moran Stiletto. (see number 1)

4. Well made D/A autos (Factory and Custom and on occasions a fancy one).

5. On occasions a knife made by a begining maker.

6. Last, but most prevalent as far the the customs in my collection -knives made by friends.

Obviously I am a very sick man .

Mel brings up a great point especially if you are starting out. Pick an area, learn it and try like heck to stick to it. Set a goal on the "type" collection and go somewhere else if you wish after getting at least within arms reach of that goal. All the while it is still ok to appreciate and drool over the stuff you are not interested in.

Mel,

Your wife collects knives too? Whew-lucky you-wonder
where I can find someone like her-:) However, back to
the original question you posed------to collect one type
or all types of knives. I definitely collect only folders
but have not decided on only one maker yet---but now that
you mention it---I am thinking that maybe I should
shift my focus and pick a maker. Now I have knives by
Elishewitz, Ralph, osborne, Al Mar, and a few others-
including of course (who doesn't have one)a graphic
Sebenza. To have or not to have (many makers)-that is
the question of the moment. Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Hey local guy, good to hear from you!

I'm impressed, there seems to be a large contingent of San Diego folks like us posting here...and there I was, thinking that we were few!

Last September, after I wrote BFC moderator Steve Harvey, (here, publicly), that I was going to be 'up his way' in the Bay Area, and would like to hook up with him....

Steve responded with, paraphrased, "Sounds like a great reason to get the BAKCA knife nuts together"...and so we did!

We reserved a back room at 'Vito's Pizza' up in Sunnyvale, invited everyone in the area that was interested to show...and show they did!

Joe Talmadge, Jim March, Steve, Evan and Josh from TAD, Eda-Koppo, Jason aka 'Medusaoblongata, was there with some cute lady friends, Hank, Steve Young from 'Speed-Tek, BAKCA Pres. Nifrand, me and my wife Edna, and a whole bunch of other knife enthusiast's whose names escape me now, showed up, 50 or so of us...very cool indeed!

Honestly, I was somewhat apprehensive at first, but it was very low-key, jeans and tee-shirts...very relaxed.

There were knives for show, knives for sale, and knives for trade...everything from swords to neck knives. I thought it would be a stuffy 'meet and greet', with the knives coming out after the pizza...and with everyone eagle-eyeing their knives...

Nope, nothing like that! Pizza and knives, everyone milling about...very casual, very fun, and just an all around good time.

I'd like to pull something like that together down here....wadda ya say FastJack, interested? :D

I'll float the idea here soon, and let's see what we can pull off. Any other So. Cal folks that are interested, please email me...and if you know of a place that will fit 50 or so of us, let me know.

As to the other collector's here, great post so far...thanks for your input...keep um coming. (I get a real kick out of hearing about other collections..it's an eye opener for me)

Mel

(And to your question about where you can "Find one like her"...I had to go up to Yukon, Canada...lol)

Howdy Mel,

Would very much like to be included in a get-together
with other knife knuts-collectors. I am pretty much
new at this and have only about 20 knives but am
willing to listen and learn-ha-would be great for me.
And I would be willing to help arrange the party. I
wonder how many enthusiasts there are in this area?
Ha--how about a newsletter? I know a great caterer who
is a close friend-great price and I know of a few places
for 50-will check them out.

Since I am knew at all this and not quite as fast
as my name says, at least at collecting knives, the
question still remains.......Better to collect one
maker's custom knives plus a few other favorites?
Or maybe a few knives from many makers? From a pure
collecting position--would a set of one maker's knives
be worth more?

Mel---after having read many of your postings, I believe the BS you referred to in the start of this thread must translate into "Basically Stable" ! Sandy

What a loaded question, I want to collect them all!! I love unusual or unique knives, mainly old utility types. I have a Horseman's knife its an IXL George Wostenholm in the 1884 cat. an Ulster Veternarian's knife, enjoying my evilness as I do, I like to show it to men and the first question all is: what's that blade(fleam) for? I tell them its for Casteration and I watch them cringe. I also love fixed blades, drop points are a fav. as well as stilleto's. As far as a man. my main interest is remington's, but if I could afford oh say randall's scagel's, loveless's, etc then they'd be the one's.
