The story starts last November. While attending a bike race up north I run into a bike manufacturer that is making a style of bike that I used to have as a mountian bike and loved but are now producing road bike frames..I am thrilled because I had heard that this small bike company had gone out of business. I asked them and they said that they were in fact back in business and back in Michigan and manufacturing bikes near my home town..how cool...I proceed to ask the price of the bike and was told $1400. Later that evening I stop by an internet cafe and check their website and see that the price is in fact $1100 Hmmmm. I return to thier booth and ask what the difference in price is..they assure me that the $1400 is 2004 price and that $1100 is the 2003 price but if I am interested they would honor the 2003 price.
The next week I visit the factory for a custom fitting of the bike that they are going to build for me. We discuss size specs etc. this was on 11/7. Two weeks go by and I hear nothing from the company. So I call them I speak with the owner and he informs me that he had just sent me a fax and that the bike was ready and at the painters and it would be two weeks and they would contact me.
When I arrive home sure enough there is a fax on my machine..a invoice for my custom road frame. Frame costing $1200 although we agreed on $1100 and a additional $400 for a alpha Q carbon fibre fork that I asked them for “assuming” that a fork was part of the $1100 price tag. So I was a bit shocked to see the $1100 bike was now $1600 (and remember there are no components yet like gruppo, seat, wheel set..) but I decided not to raise a stink cause $400 bucks for a Alpha Q fork was a good deal and $100 more than we agreed….well I REALLY WANT THIS BIKE..So I eagerly await the two week mark..
Now it is Jan 5 and I still have heard nothing from these people..This irritates me cause you would think that when someone is spending close to two grand on a bike with your start up bike company that I would not have to be the one to call. Today I took the original invoice and wrote in sharpie marker across the invoice WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THIS ORDER????? I included my phone number and awaited a call. Nothing..
Im losing my patience..and I think this is pure B.S….what should I do..
I have paid no money down for this bike, thank God but I am upset at the lousy customer service. I am tempted to cancel this order ..what would you do??

Ren it is obvious that you want this bike but with all the price jumps and lack of communications I am not sure its worth it. I would write a letter, with similar content that you have here stating your case and inform them that you do not plan to pay more than the agreed upon amount of $1100, $1500 if you want to eat the additional $400 for your CF whateverthehell, and that if you do not get a reply back from them in regards to the status of your bike within 48 hours to consider the order canceled. If anyone on there end is getting your correspondences, I am sure that would get them off there arses and get back to you.

I think you need to talk to the owner once again. Tell him EVERYTHING and even discuss whether the mistake on the fork was an assumption on your part, or miscommunication on theirs.

Forget about faxes and emails. You know better than most about words without a face...

As a start-up company, you want to represent them to potential clients. Tell them so, and tell them how business practices like this will ruin their rep. Say it with honesty and directness. "Now how are you going to make this up to me?"

Let us know.

Coop

If they want your money, they'll make it right for you...If they keep dicking you around, then move on and spend your money on a company that deserves it.

My biggest concern would be what kind of customer service this company would have should I need some work done. If they are uncommunicative now, how would they be when you really needed their help?

Ren:

I would concur with the gentlemen above. However, if that does not work, threaten them with a job referral for good ol goncz (g.b.). Fifteen minutes as their "engineering and design expert" would have them pleading for mercy. :D

No seriously, Ren, call the owner and if that's not constructive, you'll probably be wasting your time with this company. Hey, now that I think of it... kind of like dealing with g.b. :p

All the best Man,

Stuart

Ren, I am really sorry to hear this happen to you. You should definitely confront the owner about this, and NOT pay $1600 for it... what company is it? I understand really really wanting the bike, but all these price jumps are just unacceptable IMO.
