Not much love for the Manix M4?

Hi Guys,

I am trying to understand (before possibly buying) why I don't see an overwhelming positive response on the Manix M4?

The reviews and comments I found while searching around were all ok/good, but I just simply don't hear much about the knife on the forums in general. And it is still available at BBS, after more than a year of being released.

It certainly does not seem to have the same following as some of the other very popular M4 Spydercos (GB, M4 Millie).

Am I missing something?

They sold out and re stocked. I for one would take a manix 2 over a para 2 . It seems though everybody loves the para more so they are buying up all the paras instead. I would take m390 and xhp over m4. Both have recently came out in the para 2,that could be another reason

I'm new to knives and just bought a para 2, I didn't even notice the Manix M4 while doing my knife search. It seems to be a very nice knife.

I like M4 a lot and have been eyeing an M4 Manix. But with the 204P Para just around the corner, I think it'll have to wait.

The m4 manix2 suffers from the same thing as the blue para2 did...bento box's high prices. That's the only reason it doesn't get talked about much. Bento has high prices and according to some, slightly sketchy business practices.

M4 Manix is second in my pocket behind my m390 pm2. Both great knives. M4 is a decent performer and not hard to sharpen. My guess is some shy away from M4 because it's not stainless? I own the GB and Manix in M4 and love it!

I own 4 of the tan M4 Manix 2's. It's one of my favorite Spydies to date.

The tan g10 looks great, and M4 is a ridiculously awesome steel. It's not the rust monster people make it out to be either. I'd say give it shot!

I think it was really overpriced and also not stainless. Ive come to prefer stainless for my folders and I think most other people feel the same way.

The M4 may stay nice and pretty when kept in its box but when you start using it in EDC tasks and chores, especially with food, you will notice an almost immediate patina form.

I've used mine extensively for all sorts of tasks. A coating of fluid film once a month and it has stayed patina and rust free for nearly a year now, and I live in a hot, humid climate. I've cut some pretty acidic things also, like sandwiches with mustard, tomatoes, etc. :)

Just a tiny bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way.

Weren't the M4 manixes exclusive to some dealer or another in the states?

I know I've skipped a couple of those exclusive sprint runs because the dealers either wouldn't ship to Canada or charged insanely high fees for international shipping. I was down like charlie brown for the Orange M2 sprints, though.

+1
I put some tuf-glide on my gayle bradley when I first got it. carried it quite a bit with no problems. i actually tried to force a patina on it, and put it in white vinegar for over half an hour. when i took it out there was only a very slight patina around the opening hole where my thumb had worn off the tuf-glide.

I like the manix with m4. However when making a choice between the manix and gb, that is one that I will leave unanswered.

Linux, I think you touched on the root of it - if there was no GB, then I suspect the M4 Manix might have been a much bigger hit.

Take nothing away from the Manix, but IMO the GB offers more (carbon fibre, excellent F&F, solidity, heft and looks), for less $$$.

And since I already have a GB, I decided to pass on the Manix. Instead, I got a great deal on a Breeden Rescue, which looks like an interesting (and dare I say practical?) collaboration. Looking forward to try it out.

Brock,

You have gotten my point. And I really do enjoy carbon steels. However gb more than likely took some sales from the manix. The manix is a sprint run which is interesting that many choose the gb over the manix.

I wanted one then got sticker shock after looking on their website. The GB will be my next spydie I believe

One thing I do like about the Manix is that is FFG, but the profile is like so many other knives that I currently own. I do like the steel of M4 though.
