Not really impressed with new Case Swayback Gent

You could consider the new Pemberton model from GEC. Small Peanut sized knife, single blade (in Bule Acrylic too!). GEC's Conductor is another small but superb knife.

The 2 bladed CASE Swayback Jacks I have, cv and ss are very well finished knives indeed.

I bought a Chestnut bone Swayback in CV and its very nicely done. You have to try again!

OK, dealer is taking it back for a REFUND. Now I guess I need to decide if I'm going to maybe go through this again... or maybe go another route. I really like the GEC I just got. Maybe I pay up the difference and see what the wife says. ETA... I'm not anti-Case now or anything, but maybe will reserve buying Case knives I can at least see a pic of before hand. I originally picked this knife, so I don't think the wife will mind if I change models. If this was one that she liked, picked for me, and thought I would like, I would most definately replace it with the same model. I didn't want to come off sounding inconsiderate for the gift or anything.

I would be willing to sell you the one I just got and posted pictures of if you like. I can get another one next week I am going to be at that big store in TN. Its a 2008 first issue, came in the tin as well. I have t carried or used it yet

I just recently traded my Swayback Jack, I wasn't too happy with it either, f & f were good on it except it wasn't centered, I just couldn't warm up to the knife :/

WOW! Thanks so much for the offer, but I will have to gracefully decline. I think if I stick with Case, I would go with a CV Swayback Jack. The Gent sure is pretty, but I actually like heavier thicker knives. I'm thinking I'd like the Jack better with the slight gain in weight and width. I'm looking at the GEC's and nothing current is REALLY calling to me. I really like the 55's, but and holding out for a pen secondary (fingers crossed) and I want to pick up a clip point Boys when they are out. I love the look and feel on my current Boys and have been comparing everything to that. Haven't found the magic one yet. The Pemberton though, could fit the small knife bill though. Just wish TIW would add a secondary with their ebony scales:(

Not very happy with my new Case Swayback Jack, either. Part of it is that it just feels like it should be a little bigger, which I know is totally subjective, but I would like it a lot more if it was another 1/4" - 1/3" longer.

But what I'm more disappointed by is the color. I ordered the "cayenne bone" and it is a much more bright, cheesy orange than what was pictured. I was really excited about this knife, and really wanted to like it, but the color is just hideous. And it also shows a fair bit of white = poor dye job.

Too bad. The other two Case folders that I own are great, but when I look at this one, I don't even want to put it in my pocket.

I'm not sure, but in the current CASE catalogue are they still using line drawings? It can be awfully hard to know what the colour of handles can be from such illustrations. Quite a few dealers on the Bay rely on these drawings and they look nothing like the real thing.

Send it to me. I'll take care of it for you. :p

I don't know about "line drawings," but have found Case's "official" pictures of their knives and bone colors to be very misleading. The good ones almost always look much better in person, and the bad surprises are all the more shocking.

For those of you who have received partially dyed and/or garishly-colored knives, I've seen some of those on shelves and understand your disappointment.

My (limited) understanding is that each set of bone can have varying characteristics that affect how dye is absorbed (depending on what part of the shin the bone came from, and from what cow-- as just one example), plus it sure does look like Case cranks 'em through until a run is complete, no matter how much dye may (or may not) be remaining at the end. Ugh.

This. The site I ordered my Swayback from showed a pic, not a line drawing.

However, I will say that I ordered a Sawcut Mini-Trapper not long ago, and I'm quite happy with the f&f, blade alignment, color, etc. It's just such too much of a gamble with Case these days, if you're not actually selecting the knife in person.

I think I'll stick with my GEC's and Northwoods....

case needs to step-up, even 1 ,out of say, 10, is too many quality issues to be ignored. I have a few case knives and recently recd my first GEC #55 pattern, no issues with it at all. After my last case purchase, over the net too, I was almost afraid to open my new GEC box.
