Photos Not so discouraged!

My platen is dished right down the middle. If I leave a knife sitting there on a running belt I can see the smile it makes. Serves me right for using ceramic tile from the hardware store, I guess.

I'm definitely no grinding master and I'm not one to blame my equipment but I wonder, because just adjusting the platen to minimize the slack did a lot for me today. It was slight and it's even slighter now, but the dish and subsequent smile still remains.

I use a Neo-Ceram platen. It's ceramic fireplace glass designed to withstand high temps, and it took my bevels to the next level.

Nice knife.

I just ordered one. It'll be here Tuesday. I've got a couple more blanks ready to grind and if the glass platen is really a game changer, I'm wondering if I should wait.

If you have a Problem now with your Platen...WAIT...you won't be sorry. I've used them for 15 years and I won't grind without them!!

Every little thing helps. We are constantly chasing equipment improvements to make things easier.

Using this glass platen to grind bevels on annealed steel is like cheating. I can use a worn out belt and still get straight lines, freehand or jig. But the problem remains that my lines get wavy when I'm grinding hardened steel, freehand or jig, old or new belt. That's definitely my issue and not the grinder. Kind of at a loss on that one but I'm sure I just need more practice. I'm running out of scrap knives to try.

Depending on what the waviness looks like (picture?), it could be that the blade sees more time on the belt towards the center of the blade. Its kind of like, wherever the blade is being ground, the belt is still grinding in the middle of the blade. Unless it is a long blade of course.
I know that I get waves when I get pretty eager... Go easier and more light passes till you get where you want to be.
I also find using scribe lines on the blade sides gives me visual help also.
Hope that makes sense.

The center of the blade is indeed where the waves begin. Lighter passes may help. Perhaps with more time spent on the low spots?
