Not so recent knife store visit story

BTW, you're lucky to have a mall store selling knives at all. All the mall knife stores around here went out of business long ago. Remember Cutlery World?

Are you asking me if I remember Cutlery World? I don't know where you're located but I do remember where a knife store was in San Jose at Valley Fair Mall. If you're talking about that place then I do know what store you're talking about. If that's the place you're at, there another place with a pretty damn good selection not 5 minutes from there. I forget what the place is called but if you confirm to me that you're in SJ, I'll find out and give you the name of the store.

I agree that the OP handled the situation with a certain grace, and did not intend by any means to slam him. 'Blew it' was a crappy choice of words. But it still say it was a teachable moment that was lost.

I grew up seeing knives being thrown left and right in tv/movies, and in my youth I thought that was what they were for. I remember I had a Gerber dagger was probably the most expensive knife I bought growing up, and I bent the tip by throwing it. Dumb? Sure, but so are all of us at times. This guy probably grew up watching Cold Steel videos.

Since there are always efforts to ban knives, we need all the friends we can get, and we need them to be smart and knowledgable. It is always worthwhile to engage people with friendly education.

Thanks for the clarification wutitiz. I agree with your points, I'm just a little slow to offer too much information unless a person gives me a good indication that they're actually interested in learning more. I've just found that when I decide for people on what they "should" do, it usually falls on deaf ears. I really didn't get the feeling like the kid wanted to actually learn more about quality knives.

I guess I'm pretty fortunate. I live 3 minutes away from a knife store with most of the medium to high end production knives and one of the guys there owns like 10 Striders, and like 18 Spydies. He doesn't get on forums but seems to know a lot more than me. I think he says that they go to all of the major knife shows.

I'm also a 30-45 minute drive to TAD Gear where all of the employees carry $700-$1000+ worth of knives on them. These guys know what their talking about.

And lastly, I recently attended a meet and greet from another knife forum. There must've been $30k+ worth of custom knives in that sushi restaurant. At least one of the guys who was there either works (or if I remember correctly from a knife show last year, owns) EDC Knives. At least one of the knives I held is selling on edcknives.com for $2k+. One of the guys who I was talking to the most had an extensive Emerson collection. In the middle of the conversation, he slides me a well loved Emerson CQC-7B and says "Here, now you own an Emerson.". Talk about being in a great place for knives.BTW the CQC-7 looks well used but from a utilitarian perspective, it's in great shape.

I'm high jacking my own thread.

I have a friend like this. I was showing him some folders and he would hold them, weigh them out and be like "man, I bet this would work as a throwing knife!"

I wrongfully replied something to the effect of "you wouldn't want to throw them because they might break" and he was surprised that a folder I was claiming to be good would break that way. I corrected myself a bit by saying I didn't see the point in throwing a good folder against the wall, as it would be like tearing money up, but I think he still walked away with the assumption that the knives were just crap.
