NOT THE YOJIMBO!!!! Do the REACTOR, PLEASE!!!

4.75 inches for its blade...

A lil to much for an EDC in most US states !

cheers

Great looking blade although a bit large. My question is "why blue G-10 on the yojimbo? Black's tacticler. Any Snody design rocks though.

Wow, I think this might be my first post on the Spydie Forum. Ed C

The 3" blade is legal EDC concealed in a LOT more places than a 4.25" blade.

Also, there is more front guard, and the grind is steeper and probably simpler.

Blue G10 was requested by Mr. Janich IIRC so it would blend in with blue jeans.

I still prefer black to blend in with jeans AND khakis.

Either way, I'm picking up 2. ;)

:)

BTW, Walking, I'd guess that the blade is heat treated. And also, to the specs provided by some mondo excellente Japanese heat-treat meister. ;)

I have to agree with the rest. It's too big for EDC carry. Not to mention the rather pronouced false edge may have the blade falling into the "Dagger" catagory. Yes, I'm speaking from first hand experince.

I'm actually refering to the blade shape more than Specifics.
I'm sure either can be ordered either larger or smaller.
Also, take a close look, it appears the Yojimbo is also ground on the back side.

Shape of the blade, or shape of the handle?

I still prefer the Yojimbo's handle shape because of the front guard (absent in the Reactor) and the significantly pronounced hump in the rear taper.

As for the blade, yes, the Spydie version is normal flat v-ground, not chisel-ground. Thank God... with a flat grind like that, it wouldn't barely cut straight at all :p (not to rag on the chisel-ground Snody version... but I prefer a little utility in my knives, SD or not. ;) )

Jeff,

You're right, the Reactor has a false edge/swedge.

The Yojimbo is just thin and tapered in the front because of its flat-ground blade, therefore obviating the need for a swedge to improve piercing performance.

Ah, another reason I love the flat grind.

Edit: I think WM might be talking about the fact that the grind on the Yojimbo (both Snody and Spydie) is two-sided (hollow on the Snody and flat on the Spydie) rather than single-sided like a chisel-ground blade (like the Reactor).

Nemo posted a review of the Ronin, which has a similar blade grind and geometry, also in VG-10.

He uses it as an ice pick.

I wouldn't chop bricks with the Ronin or Yojimbo, but I think that'll do just fine.

the reactor is sexy, but a shorter version, full-handled, dropped down to just under 3" (i know that i'm less likely to be hassled here in NC with a sub-3" knife) would be excellent! carbon fiber would look great on this!

Bah! That thing has an even less ergonomic handle than the Yojimbo! Forget it. I want to be able to use (and yes, on rare occassions abuse..) my knives, not just admire them on my desk.

the yojimbo has what looks to be a fairly ergonomic handle.

it reminds me a little of the emerson I&I sports tanto, which is among the most hand-friendly folders i've had.

why do you think the yojimbo will be uncomfortable and will not be able to be abused? the compression lock alone is a good sign that the lock will hold, and prior testing with the ronin shows that the blade is surely heavy-duty enough (if you dont do full-power plunges into concrete, that is...)

Biogon..

No, sorry, I don't think I made myself clear. I meant that the reactor handle doesn't seem ergonomic enough to be a serious tool, at least in the MBC/tactical sense. I agree that the Yojimbo certainly is a more solid design for grip strength, although I do not favor the "thumb-on-top-of-the-blade" hold that Mr. Janich advocates. I am a fan of the old REKAT Carnivore, Kasper Folder, Emerson Commander, and other really "grippy" knives with lots of G-10, texture, choil, and grooves. I'd just like to see more Spydies with these sorts of features. Sorry for the miscommunication...

moving target,

ahhhh... yes. *nod*

i apologize -- i kind of skipped over the part where you mentioned it was even less ergonomic _than_ the yojimbo. too early in the morning, i chalk it up to. ;)

i agree, now that you describe it like that... never thought of that. both the reactor and the yojimbo lose a little material near the back. at least it has some front guard/choil, which is more than i can say of the reactor.

the kasper folder and commander are babies with exxxxxxcelent ergos, i agree much :D

then again, i don't have any MBC training (fixing that soon!) and i like the feel of mid-size handles (strider gb, emersons) vs small handles (MT LCC, any mini emerson) or huge handles (any becker K&T)

i don't know anything about janich's grips, or the alternatives -- wouldn't a thumb-on-the-blade-ramp make for a pretty difficult thrust?

thanks for clarifying and take care,

-jon
