HORSES* (daggonit I hate spelling errors)...but I have an update. I started a thread aways back about startin' a fire with a firesteel. Well, I DID IT and it's not a fluke (did it multiple times...made fire that is, not what some of you wierdos are thinkin' of :D). I used shaved wood and took someone's advice on not skimping on tinder. Well a big ol' honkin' pile later and WOOSH!; not just ember but fire!

Also, I have no idea why this came to mind but the River Rock light that's at Target (click cap, tactical-like, AA, with a pocket clip) I've had for a year now and it's a great light. Good throw, really bright for a AA, and Xenon. Just thought if someone was lookin for a cheap, beater light I'd mention them; tough as nails IMO.

good work man, its an awesome feeling getting something like that to work!

Congrats man, I was actually thinking about that thread last night in the yard as I made a fire for me and the Mrs. :D Good job man. Oh, and I cheated, I used dryer lint :D

i still have yet to start a fire with just fire steel and what i find outside.... :(

When I finally got my hands on some ferrocerium blanks I decided not to rely on anything but what I could find outside. Sometimes I am lucky and I can find fatwood or birch bark. Sometimes I just have to spend a fair amount of time looking for dry stuff and schredering it to smallish strands to catch my sparks. I guess that relying on PJ Balls or the fatwood you just brought is not the best way to improve your skills. If I was in a threatening situation I would just use one of the few bic lighters I always carry for that purpose (I don't smoke). All the fires I made so far was just because I wanted to do so, not because I was in a survival situation.
