Not useing safty bars on Spyderco Sharpmaker will lead to this.

I think the secret is "don't drink and sharpen at the same time"!!!

Did they give you a "I Gave Blood" sticker at the ER?

This is the reason all my hunting fixed blades have blade guards. When you are out in the cold in the "toolies" it is a long way to the ER.

Damn those sharp knives!

As sharp as I get my knives on the S/M, the guards are a necessity. In looking at how you got cut, if that had been me, the bone in the thumb is the only thing that would have kept me from cutting the entire thumb off.

USE THE FRIGGIN' RODS FOLKS, or as Bill Engvall would say, "Here's your sign."

I always put in the rods though I've never had an incident where a knife slipped and they saved me. I use them because they make the Sharpmaker look cool. :D

I cant move my thumb up I hope that I didnt damage anything. Doc said it looked ok guess I just have to wait and see. :(
You really need to make sure that there's no tendon damage. Tendons can't heal on their own and it gets worse the longer you wait for surgery.

A cut in that area which was deep enough to require stitches should be open enough for the Dr. to see if you cut the tendon. I'm curious to see if they did spread it apart before stitching you up to see if your cordage was still intact.

Well I did ask the Doctor to see if I had cut a tendant. He said hmm well let me get another Doctor to take a look. So another Doctor comes in takes a look spreads it apart says it looks ok. I think its just inflamed because I was able to move it up some that night now two days later I can't even bend it up on my own.If it don't get any better after a week or so I will go back to Doctor and say you fked up.

I dont mean this as a smart allic statement , just an observation . The one way I guess you wouldnt need the protection rods is if you mounted the sharpmaker semi permanent where you dont have to have your hand down there .

That's good.

I've had complications from a cut tendon that did not get re-connected(in my right foot). The cut took a long time to heal up and it oozed a clear yellow liquid for several weeks before it closed up. Even after the cut healed the oozing continued under the skin for weeks. I could tell because the wound formed a bump that was somewhat squishy under finger pressure. It took a couple of months before that liquid was dispersed and the wound site went flat again. I could tell the tendon was cut because I couldn't flex my big toe upward. Still can't to this day.
An Orthopeadic Surgeon verified the tendon was severed and offered her services to repair it but too much was going on with my health at that time and now it's become one of those "Why bother now?" situations.:foot:

I pray you heal quickly and fully!

And, don't forget the brass rods!:D

Well a week and a half later still not better.I had a orthopedic doctor look at it and he said that it looks like I will need surgery so I'm going tomorrow for surgery at 11:30.I guess those ER doctors were wrong what a suprise. lol Looks like I will be off for a few days.Bad thing is I use my hands alot since I'm a auto mechanic.

Never had surgery before hopefully all gos well.
My wife says to me if I can have a baby you can have this simple thumb operation. I said yeah I guess.. :D

At least they knew enough about knots to use a square knot, and not a granny knot, so it held! :D

Should have been a surgeon's knot- like a square with one extra pass top and bottom- holds better. :p

Good luck on the surgery. Should all come right in short order afterwards. I'll keep a good thought going for you.

Let us know how it goes.

To the SM users out there. Use them rods!!!

A friend o mine did the same thing except was cutting up a deli corned beef with a big-azz butcher knife - he slipped and severed halfway through the lefthand index finger between the knuckle and first joint - he went to the Dr. and as he was moving it for the doctor to observe he snapped the tendon which was apparently cut into. He had to wear this freddy krueger looking pulley system on his hand/wrist for months. Always use the rods - I've had it slip and luckily they were in place. Also helps not to sharpen like your on speed.

You call that a cut?
Hell I cut through the middle down to the first knuckle right through the nail, on a band saw.
