November 2014 Challenge Discussion Thread

I'm hoping more people post up in this otherwise it might go down as the least participated challenge thread of all time.

I considered this challenge when you first offered it up, but then in thinking about "how" I could do it, I realized I can’t.

I would have been in, but I didn't catch that I had to post my EDC in the idea thread, :( This will be the first contest that I haven't participated in since joining.

Sorry, Derek.... Plans changed today and I wasn't able to head downtown this morning. I might still try this one sometime later this winter. I'm pretty disappointed I'm not able to give it a shot since I was pretty excited about the urban survival challenge coming back into the rotation.

Currently doing it

Nikki's in it to win it!

I "survived" about 6 hours downtown on black Friday for a trip to the mall and to watch them light up the Christmas lights on the Soldier's and Sailor's Monument with the wife, her friend, her friend's husband and their one year old son. I should have documented that experience.

Nikki, I love your four-legged friend! With his grey and black markings, is there some healer or Australian shepherd in him?

Thank you! He is a catahoula lab mix. But sometime I think I'm living with an 80 pound baby goat.

Haha - That sounds like a fun mix to me.

Congratulations, Nikki! I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to get out there and give you a run for the money. Yesterday would have been awesome since we had a break in below freezing temperatures this weekend. It got up to 62 downtown from what I saw.

I still might have to try the challenge, or a variation of it just for the heck of it in January. Since I commute straight across or around my city every day, these might be a nice set of skills to learn or at least be exposed to.

Thank you everyone, I will post what I posted in the challenge thread.
I am super grateful and happy to have been able to participate in this. The generosity of the mods on this board, and the people in general is just amazing!
I was able to learn a few things about my personal EDC, and what I need to add. I also had a blast and was able to look at my surroundings in a more opportunistic way, and noticed nooks and crannies that were previously invisible to me. It also taught me a lot about remaining unseen.
I do believe that if anyone else would have participated, I would not have won. I was really hoping to see what everyone else came up with.
So here's to the best participation trophy that has ever been won!
Thank you so much again!

You did a great job on this Nikki. Well deserved win. Care to elaborate on your EDC shortcomings? Always interested on other peoples experiences. Jealous to see you out in shorts and sandals lol. Would've been neat to participate in this, but since it's like -30 out with 2' of snow around here, and I don't EDC a dog sled team...:) Congrats again on the win.

Thank you again. It was a good day to do it on account of the weather for sure, in the 70's. Alas, Texas weather, it's in the 30's today.
The biggest shortcoming I found with the limited stuff I did was cordage. I built that less than structurally sound lean to, and it would have been great to have some paracord to secure the sticks to the bridge in some fashion.
Also a tarp, or maybe a high quality emergency blanket would have been good for an overnight stay. The second shelter I found was great, and could have been next level if I would have had something to wrap up in, or make a closing with.
I think it would also be in my best interest to carry a small alcohol stove in addition to my firesteel and fat wood. It would give me the ability to boil water, or heat something up more covertly. The fire made a lot of smoke, and I could hear people on the bridge comment about it.
