Since I just got rid of a few now I will be buying something new.

Just not sure what to get. I have about $185 to spend.

Hmmm...any opinions? What would you buy with $185?

I don't need the knife or knives for any specific task. I'm just wanting to get a nice G10 folder with good steel.

Thinking of the following:

Rat Trap
Mini-Manix
Paramilitary
Military
BM 710
BM 520
BM 806
Al Mar SERE 2000
Al Mar Nomad

:D Well, you could bye a BM910 Stryker they are being discontinued.:D

Just kidding Dave. I have been eyeing the Combat Elite RRF folder. It doesn't have G10 handles but inserts on a Titanium handle w/ a S30V blade. Sweeet!:p

For $185 I'd be eagle-eyeing the "For Sale By Maker" section, just waiting for the special little thing that caught my attention. I wouldn't pay that much for a mass-produced knife.

Best Wishes and happy shopping,
-Bob

I would go with the Paramilitary, closely followed by the Al Mar SERE.

Both of them are well under the $185 mark, so you can probably get one of those plus a cheaper knife like a BM 550, one of the FRN Spydercos or something along those lines to try out.

You could always put that $185 away for your child's college fund. If not, then wait for something fancy to strike your eye and cause false pangs of need so that instead of asking our opinions you can buy it, snap pics, and proclaim: Look at this insanely cool knife and try not dying from envy!

Have the people suggesting the SERE handled the other knives on his list? I have the following:

BM 710
BM 806
Al Mar SERE 2000

The BM710 was one of the first good folding knives I bought, about 6 years ago. Oh look, it's currently in my pocket, where it has been 99% of the past 6 years.

The 806 is also a great knife, but I like the 710 since it has the same blade length, but a shorter handle, so it carries a little nicer for me.

Next on my list, out of your list, is a Paramilitary and a Manix. Maybe the Rat Trap. I know a Manix would see little EDC, as it's to big for what I'd want for EDC. The Paramilitary might have a better chance at displacing the 710 for some pocket time, but the AXIS lock is hard to give up.

As for the SERE 2000, it's a solid knife, but I don't care for it. The blade looks to small compared to the handle, it just looks kinda silly to me. I also don't care for how big the handle is, but people with really large hands might like it, but I don't like having more handle than I need, I like to keep things stream lined. The BM710 is stream lined compared to the size of the blade, yet it's built like a tank with full, dual steel liners, and has one of the strongest locks available on a production folder.

You might want to try and snag a BM710HS which has the M2 steel, unless you don't care for blade coated blades.

If you're going to check out Al Mar models you may wish to take a look at the Shrike as well. I have it with the micarta scales. Very nice knife, sharp VG10, flicks open very easily, feels good in hand.

Also, you have the BM 520 on there, but that has T6 aluminum handles, not G10. Damn good knife, but if you want G10 only it's out of the mix.

I'd take the Chinook over all of them, or maybe the Military. Depends on if you need your pocket space or are bothered by weight.

I can carry three "heavy" knives clipped to one pocket and not even feel them, but I only where carpenter jeans.

went with the SERE 2K, great knife. had a problem with a screw on the g-10 slab and it was sent in and back in short order. happy with my purchase. this knife feels great. some say to big, i don't think so, i've got small hands and it's one of my most confortable blades

It only took you a year to make up your mind? I don't know ... you shouldn't rush into things like that ...

mini manix you will love it, I had to get one to see what all the fuss was about, I now know. G-10 full liners, strongest spyderco lock, 14mm hole, full flat grind, and s30v. Yeah can't go wrong (sorry didn't see this was an old thread)

Hurry and get the BG-42 CF military. It is my favorite knife. The peel-ply carbon fiber is more grippy than spyderco's g-10 (ridiculously grippy), the BG-42 steel is a dream with great cutting ability and ease of sharpening, and the fit and finish is the best I have ever seen in a knife..
