please tell me how you get the scale off your knife after doing the quench.
they say ask someone smarter then yourself if you don't know, but she went to work. someday i'll catch on.

Depending on how much I have left to do to get to final dimensions, either with 220 grit wet/dry paper and oil, or on a 400 grit belt with frequent dunks in water to keep from over heating. I usually hit it with a belt to take most of the scale off, and finish off with sandpaper. If you're doing it all by hand, good 220 grit and a backing stick with oil will get you there eventually.

I've suddenly become fond of a soak in sodium bisulfate (with good ventilation)
just never have steel and anything bearing copper go in the same bath (one bath only gets steel - - - etc.

It makes a great "discovery etch" for seeing what your damnacus patterns will look like.
just neutralize with sodiumm bicarb and rinse thoroughly when done

It's sold as Jewelers pickle under the brand name Sparex, but their stuff is dirty oily crap, I get the house brand from Rio, but apparently it's even cheaper if you get it from a swimming pool and hot tub supplier under the brand name "PHdown"

Use lots of ventilation, the fumes when your steel goes in are unpleasant and toxic

I have some PHdown, can I use this as a jewelers pickle? I want to kill some flux left over from soldering.

You just grind it off.

I dont get scale anymore since I starting using PBC anti-scale. You can buy it from Brownells catalog. Costs about $20.

Another trick to minimize scale is to wrap your blade in a rag right after you come out of the quench. As it cools, a good bit of the scale will fall off.

Liquid anti-scale compound, do you put it on and then heat and quench and then ht and wash
something new to me.
who would of guessed.

The stuff I use is PBC and is in powder form. I hear there is a liquid form of it now. When I run out Im looking into the liquid stuff.

I place the knife on the surface grinder and with two or three passes, it history with that. This method takes about 45 seconds to do. Having the right tools is always the right way to go. I enjoy using it when I make knives. This way I know its nice and flat. -----

The times I have used it in a pinch I have not noticed any difference. I make up a close to saturated solution and use it warm, Just be aware that just as with any other pickle if there is steel in a bath that has at any time seen copper the copper will plate out on everything. If you have a situation where that will be a problem I have found that time and hot water will eventually dissolve flux (especially in the ultrasonic if you have one) and wet pressurized steam works sometimes too (I have a tankless steamer for cleaning jewelry after polishing, you could probably use an espresso steamer in a pinch)

Hope this is useful
