This is my very first post concerning the "new forum". That is since the topic and its different categories of membership were established. But first to answer the question at hand. Leave the folders and fix categories seperate. But combine the productions and customs. As already expressed, there are sometimes some differences of opinions on which knives fall into either of the two categories.

Back to the "new forum". I was quite happy to enroll as a gold member. But the option to edit my own post before the "time limit" and the required permission/ request from the administrator to do so is a minus in my opinion. I did not know of this policy/ rule prior to joining. The inability to edit may cause for extra band width use and longer load time. And not to mention a huge inconvenience. I.e. to update product status, to add new items, to pull items off for sale/ trade, to lower prices, etc. If there is a thread on this topic, someone kindly provide its url here for all who are not aware. I would like to hear the reasons. If not, then perhaps starting a seperate thread is required. Thanks.

I have 5 minutes at 4am to look through the for sale stuff. I buy only fixed blades, I have bought 6 knife in the last 3 weeks. I don't have time to dig through the junk like BM, Cold Steel, Spiderco, etc..
I'm a buyer, make it easy to find what "I" want.
And isn't that part of the reason Sellers post here, to find "Buyers?"

I wasn't overjoyed when the Forum changed and my regular post (where I exchanged information with customers) disappeared off the face of the earth with no advance notice. That was screwing with my livelihood. It seemed like I got more activity when it was just "Exchange/Makers" also.
However, are we going to change the format every month and keep everybody confused forever????? I have gotten used to the new setup and maybe my customers are beginning to (though it's a bit of a stretch for somebody to look for a tomahawk in a "fixed blade" knife section). If you're going to change it again, go back to the EXACT SETUP THAT EXISTED BEFORE THE CHANGEOVER, and this time let the makers know ahead of time what you're going to do!
My other gripe is the limit on editing a post. When you first set up the new format I used the initial block of my regular post for update bulletins to my customers so that I didn't have to create a new post every time something new came up. It helps cut down on clutter. Now I can't do that. The "thread owner" should be able to edit his/her post(s) WITHOUT ANY TIME LIMITATION to avoid having to do new posts on the thread for changes in product/ordering/price/address etc. information previously posted by the maker or dealer who "owns" that sales thread. One reason we're willing to pay for the privilege is the ability to put out good current information for our customers.

Here's my suggestion: Use the format of INDIVIDUALS, MAKERS, and DEALERS under the EXCHANGE category.
Provide two categories for MAKERS:
(1) CUSTOM AND SEMI-PRODUCTION (both one-of-a-kind and small batch runs essentially hand-done by the maker) and,
(2) PRODUCTION (factory-made large-batch production of standard models on factory-type machinery).
As to the new "fixed-blade" vs. "folders" categories, a lot of makers do BOTH ... are they supposed to have to spend the time maintaining TWO threads for their work instead of hitting the grinder to meet customer demand?

If you want to cut down on clutter and bandwidth, restrict each maker to ONE thread, by MAKER NAME/TRADEMARK/COMPANY NAME etc. and let the maker design and update the thread (with unlimited editing) to post whatever the current production and ordering information is. Send all GENERAL discussion to the appropriate other forum areas, (as you now seem to be doing) and restrict posts on the maker's thread to specifics of their products (as your moderator has already done with my thread under the new format).

Sorry for the long post, but your poll question covers a lot of area.

Two Hawks,

Some of us Gold Members only use the "For sale" forum to buy/sell our personal collections.

I'm not sure if I understand this talk of "customers" for a mere $30 a year... I thought those opinions ran $850 a year!!!

Anyhow, I liked the big mess we had before!! All private sales in one place. Dealers and Makers in their own slots. All for one; one for all...

I don't think combining the categories will do anything to affect the formerly busy forsale forum. I believe a lot of people that sold items for free here are a little salty about the fee and taking their forsale items to knifeforums. I think that's okay. When I buy something from a gold member I feel a little safer, especially because a lot of untrustworthy people use freemail addresses, a credit card purchase of the membership increases accountability. This is not to say that if you use a freemail address, then you are automatically untrustworthy...I use one (because my old email address used to get hit with all kinds of spam, and I'm pretty sure that someone who lurks the forums was collecting email addresses.) Actually I'm for making everyone who is able to login have a non-freemail account (with exceptions like Keninshiro). We've had some major fiascos with people that just sign-up with several freemail addresses.

A note about accountability:
I once read an article in my local newspaper that said that people would be a lot nicer if their names was always visible on the forehead and on the rear end of people. Its a lot harder to be an ass when people know exactly who you are.

Please simplify.

But I like the "fixed" and "folder" distinctions would be very helpful to keep.

I like the idea of categories for fixed and folders. I don't mind looking at posts for customs, or semi-customs, or high end knives. Who knows, there might be a great deal on one that I would choose over a production knife.

Yes... I am fairly new here, but did catch the tail end of the old way and liked it better. Plus... it is a good education for a newbie to see all the different knives offered in one category like folders.

You click one and get to see everything from BM's to Sebe's to Carson customs. It helps one learn what is out there and the price differences available.

C4 - I can't afford a personal collection. I just make the stuff. As to the $850, that's why I'm on BLADE Forum. The bank takes most of what I make to pay for the machinery, custom mold, and materials loans, and I can't afford that kind of advertising. I make the best working hawks in the world, but I can't make enough of them to pay for high-priced ad agencies.
If you're selling your personal collection you're probably not in the "MAKERS" area anyway ... that area is my only concern since it's the only one that affects my ability to sell what I make to pay the above-mentioned bank.

Sorry if I seem a bit snippy but I am old, tired, about half sick, and behind schedule. It ain't been a great day. I can live with whatever they decide to do with the Forum ... I have been adapting to other people's decisions for nearly 60 years so why change now.

Two Hawks,

My mistake. I thought you were a knife dealer complaining about the new look...:o :o

Just visited your web site. Nice stuff!

Michael

Please keep the custom and production knives separate!

It would be infinitely better to post a Reeves in BOTH forums rather than wade through all the same-same production stuff.

Two Hawks - slightly OT, but I recently visited your site - will go back again and decide on a model. Haven't done front loaders in 35 years, but am seriously looking at them again and one of your "Hawks" would go well with a new front stuffer. :)

Well then,

I'm happy to see that I'm still in the minority...I just wanna know who the 10% asskissers are...lol ;)

I'm thinking that maybe we should make an exception and put RMK's in the "Knife, Custom, Folding" category...Bwahahaha

Truthfully, separate the fixed from the folders would be my choice, but what do I know...I'm just an FNG...

it makes it much easier to look at..i tried to vote but it said my session was invalid?? a little help
