Now this is a cool picture!

That is cool to see the vapor jacketing like that. I remember one time seeing some high speed footage of a sword being quenched and the resulting curve being "set." It was very dramatic to watch it curve down, then up.

Notice the edge is well into the cooling phase while the spine is still well in the vapor phase, that's hamon-y stuff right there!
 
What is the material coming off the blade, carbon from the fuel in the furnace? Great picture.
