This thing is a Brute ! - 6" blade x 3/16" thick x 2" wide ! Convex edge & Lazer Sharp ! This thing is built like a tank & comes w/ a nice leather sheath

I completely agree. Stomper is first class. i have a JK Hiker and love it. He'll make whatever you want...

When I was in the USCG (over 25 years ago) I was issued a Camillus Airforce Survival knife in a leather sheath, nothing fancy, 5" blade, stone stored in the sheath etc. etc. and I just carried that thing on every outing, camping, hunting, traveling for years. I have several now, all Camillus, and I use them still out in the "sands". I have bigger and nicer fix blades but I just keep going back to these tough little knives. I guess my point is I feel like, looking at the array of fantistic knives pictured here, I must have fell off the knife radar a long time ago ... Great knifes .. wow!

Survival where? I prefer a machete for zombie killing if that's what you're thinking - second choice would be a kukri.

I've always found a LM multi-tool far more useful than any plain knife so even in wilderness my first choice is an original Leatherman Wave, followed by the heavier Charge - and if I want to add something bigger it'll be a Falkniven F1. Some people are happy with SAK's but I like my multi-tools to have pliers and locking blades.

I just ordered the Ka-Bar Becker BK9 for my survival type blade. Around my price range for $70 dollar range. Now for a fixed blade, I am looking at a RAT knife, the RC-6 or an RC-5.

I promise I'm not trying to be a jerk by asking this:

Do you leave the house carrying the BK9 only when you're PLANNING to get yourself into a survival situation, then carry something else when you're not?

A survival knife is the one you're carrying when you find yourself dropped into a survival situation. I'll bet it will be a smaller blade because you get darned tired of carrying two pounds of steel around.

Please don't take this as criticism: I don't go backpacking without carrying AT LEAST two knives --- but I don't carry a special knife just for survival purposes. The knife you choose for everyday tasks is the one you'll choose if you're in a pickle.

Just my opinion.

I do agree with Elkins45. If I were to end up in a totally unplanned "survival" scenario I would most likely be using a fallkniven U2, since that is what I EDC.

If my bushcraft/berry picking/mushroom picking/day trip end in a survival scenario I would probably have a Fallkniven F1/ H1, a WM1, a folding saw and a multitool etc.

I would not bring anything longer than a 4" blade because longer knives needs a shorter as a complement.

Look for something light and strong and about a 3"-4" blade.
Fallkniven has bare blades, Becker and Bark River has small neck knives etc.

Where does a bushcraft trip turn into a survival scenario? If you are a total noob you will end up needing to "survive" a lot earlier than a skilled bushcraft person.

If you want to have a knife for a survival situation and your asking which knife from us I suggest before buying anything that you learn the skills. You do not need a huge chopper to survive in the woods and it will be pretty useless if you lack all the skills to make fire etc. Some of the best bushcrafters in the world get by with a small fixed blade (4 incher). However, a good chopper or an axe come in handy for many tasks.

Just remember that a great knife is only one small part of the equation. Id suspect 99.9% or us would be screwed if the world came to an end simply because of bad luck and lack of skills. You may not be able to control luck, but you can learn the skills. Once you have the skills, you won't need advice on the tools you need. Have the fun is learning what tools will work for you. You may find that your original ideas of a good survival knife change a lot. They have for me:)

One good knife in the size your looking for is the Scrapyard SOD. They come up from time to time on the exchange.

Maybe a RAT RC6 or Fallkniven A1?
