Now what

BTW, I didn't know that there several models of the Stryker. I think the one I am looking for is the Nitrous Stryker with a D2 blade. estate4life, thanks for the great advce.

I personally have a 580 and smaller than average hands for a guy but I can easily close this A/O one handed with either my right or left hand. Just use both your thumb and middle finger to pull down the Axis lock and use your index finger to close the blade. It only took me several attempts (practicing) to actually close the knife one handed with either hand.

Got a quote from a guy I know on 580 for $90 shipped. Good deal or not?

pingz, I did try something similar but I couldn't get the technique right. My finger kept slipping off the blade. I decided that it wasn't a dealbreaker. I am just spoiled with the axis lock's super, super easy closing.

$90 for new isn't bad.
if you do want to close it one hand, keep practicing when you get one and you'll have no problem one handing it

BM907SBKD2 Benchmade Mini-Nitrous Stryker Spear-Point, Black Blade, Combo Edge (New Warranty Repaired) $75.00

That's what I'm seeing for best price on a Stryker!

The 580 and 581 look really nice too, be sure to write about it if you spring for the 580!

You just answered your own question flawlessly. I would suggest you save the 100 until a blade comes around that screams at you I have to have that knife, it's incredible. Otherwise you will just keep buying knives for the heck of it, fondling it a few minutes with not much excitement, and putting it in the safe. I speak from my own experiences.

Just don't want you to drop a Benjamin and two weeks later, you see a knife for 175 that you drool over. In any case good hunting!

I was unexpectedly at a BM dealer today. I got to handle the 580.
Pros:

About perfect size

Fast opening

I, personally, liked the safety/lock

Handle had medium grip about like a coated Kershaw

Cons:

Closing the knife and how. That was the only thing that irked me. I am spoiled with the nitrous Blitz because I can close it one handed super easily.

I don't know what I am going to do. I will probably just sit still will my wallet works out the sting.

My take - I think what happens is; in our enthusiasm, and early into the game, we buy or trade up for everything we can get our hands on whether it fits both hands and budget or not...and fill our safes and desk drawers with stuff we won't use. (But we HAD to have it right?) Eventually we come 'round and go the selective route by letting go of the extras and ones we don't actually like. Or not. In that light, I now have in my collection a good representation of Benchmade models that I'm not willing to either trade Or sell...and my overall "gathering" has slowed down to a trickle. But that took a number of years to accomplish and not without a few regrets along the way (I can't replace some of those, or afford them now anyway...)

Yes, there are a number that will remain LE/NIB forever, well nearly so...but I've actually begun to seek out and move in to EDC use, duplicates of the keepers, but these being lightly to well used make having them a pleasure. They cost less and I can use 'em with no worries.

So...the quote "Now What?" begins to find a balance and then makes choosing the right "Next knife" that much easier to live with. Does this make sense?

Yes it makes exact sense to me. Great post.

I feel (know) I have waaaaay to many folders now. Not like some of you guys, but enough for me.

I am going to concentrate on fixed blades for a while.

Have you been watching my life from a hidden camera??? You described perfectly the progression I have/had gone through with knife purchases. What is nice now though is I have a good idea on what I like and will use and the purchasing has gone way down and now I like almost everything I do get.

For the OP, a lot of people like the BM 530 for it's lightweight and slim design. It is right on that 3.25" cut off for you, and might not be heavy duty enough. Just thought I would mention it.

This is a perfect explanation of the collector mentality. The initial point about filling our safes is a bit of beginner's uncertainty mixed with the internet perpetuating us to "keep up with the Jones's". The above can apply to almost any hobby that involves collecting. And of course we all know that the word "collector" is just a socially accepted level of ODC. LOL

Wow. To paraphrase Jesus, I have not found so great advice in all the interwebs. I do really think this is some of, if not, the best advice I have gotten off of this forum. I knew I liked this sub forum for a reason. I don't feel like an outcast for not wanting the latest and greatest folding brick. (I am looking at you, ZT 551) Kershaw did start my knife hobby though.

I think my next step is to decide about the Mini-Hardtail. What I had planned was the Blitz would be my midsize EDC and the Hardtail would be my BM Skyline. But the Nitrous was slightly smaller than expected and that threw a monkey wrench in my EDC plan. After I decided about the Hardtail, I want look for something traditional. After these two purchases, I will come back and look at to the 580 again. I still think I would carry it, but I am going to be patient.

Thanks to all the great folks who have given me such wonderful advice,
Squashfan

Well said, I try to ignore hype and find what works for me, no actual 'collection' just knives I like or have sentimental value to me.

I actually got a 580 off of the exchange and am waiting for it. The Rift does look nice but I don't like the height of the blade. Height being from edge to spine. I haven't warmed up to high blades for some reason.

The blade height and the reality that I've now got a huge but easily carried folder in the 710, and a really nice medium folder in the Nagara or functional and very trim CRKT M16, means I will probably be putting the Rift on the back burner until I've gotten my grubby paws on one of the 94xs, either mini-710 style or reverse Wharncliff blade, I don't know yet. I do know I've got months and months of enjoying and using these two knives before I should be thinking about buying any new ones.
