I'm looking to pick one of these up, most likely the bigger brother, but I was wondering--did Kershaw change this knife since they originally released it, or did they originally offer it in some variations? The reason I ask is a discrepancy I'm noticing between Kershaw and a lot of the distributors: the Kershaw catalog shows them in black G10, with the blade lengths at 2 13/16 and 3.5 inches respectively. Most websites are showing them in gray G10, with the big brother coming in at 4 inches? And the names are often written differently as reflected in the title of this thread? Is there a "new" and "old" version or do they just come in gray and black? Are the blades on the II 3.5 or 4 inches long? Do they both have Trac Tec inserts? Thanks for the clarification.

i think the only change is the color.blade length should be 3" or 3 1/2".i will tell you this ; its such a great knife, the flipper is real addicting on this. i have 80 folders, including over a dozen customs, & i pick this to carry more than any other. its just a great carry knife.i think of it in a slight way like a poor mans benchmade afck.you should google the knife & you can find it cheap, which makes it an even better bargain..

They are on sale on a lot of sites , I own the big guy ! I would rather have the little one I think.... hmm...

At any rate it is a top notch knife for the price ! Great steel , G10 , linerlock that is thick and beefy , ergonomic... The big one is quite a big knife.

My only 'not like' is how thin the tip is considering the overall size of the knife but otherwise it is a sure winner.

Get one , you wont be disappointed. :)

I have the small one and it is a hell of a knife for 20 bucks. American made too. Can't go wong. Great little flipper. Nice edge, ergos. I love it. My fav kershaw

The G-10 handle changed from grey with trac tec to all black. On many sites they are ridiculously low priced. Go for one, you won't be disappointed. They're super smooth and great slicers.

I'm waiting for one in carbon fiber and ZDP-189 to come out so I can add it to my other three.

Hint Hint Kershaw. :D

My everyday carry knife!! One of my favorites. I love that thing. I have the smaller one. I want another one.

Thanks guys. Can anyone confirm the blade length on the older Gray NRG2? Did they shrink the blade a half inch too? The Kershaw catalog definitely says 3.5 for the newer black models, but every web site with the gray ones is saying 4 inches.

I just bought one of the older ones. It is 3.5 inches.

On a side note, as a warning to you -The "grip tech" or whatever they call the black stuff on the older model with gray G-10 -it really eats pant pockets.

It is still a really nice knife though.

I have the ener-g 1740
Great small edc blade, nice hollow grind makin for a good slicer. The 13C26 Sanvik steel is pretty good at holding an edge and sharpens fairly easy.

I have the big one and it's 3.5 awsome knives but still go for the grip over it for edc haha. Still fun to play with though.

Incredible knives for the money. Extremely well built. The new ones have an all black G-10 handle. The lock-up on these are incredible. Yes the bigger model does have a 3.5" blade. Pocket clips a bit weird so I reshaped mine. The grey handle models are a real steal right now at at www.knivesrus.com .

I forgot to add to my post as well that the 'grip tape' is very agressive , what he said. :D

The two detractors from an otherwise perfect knife are the thin tip and the tape , I can live with the tip but I really wish folks would STOP using that tape on handles , it is not comfortable under long term use , eats pockets.

So is this tape the skateboard grip tape variety? Or the more rubbery kind? I thought it was the more rubbery kind, which usually isn't quite as bad. Thanks for the blade length clarification.

Didn't see this earlier or I would have replied.
TracTec is the new stuff, not like gravel. ;) for the new production models
The older models might have been a little hard on the jeans.

Originally called NRG, changed to Ener-G. There was a naming issue.

As far as models go.

1740 Ener-G Dark Grey G-10 with Black TracTec 3-3/4 closed
1745 Ener-G II Dark Grey G-10 with Black TracTec 4-3/4 closed
These two are discontinued. That's why you see them selling for much less.
They were made with 13C26

1740BLK Ener-G Solid Slab Black G-10 3-3/4 closed MSRP $89.95
1745BLK Ener-G II Solid Slab Black G-10 4-3/4 closed MSRP $99.95
These two are current production. These were made with 13C26, but will/have been changed to 14C28N.

1740BLKST Ener-G Solid Slab Black G-10 w/partial serration 3-3/4 closed
1745BLKST Ener-G II Solid Slab Black G-10 w/partial serration 4-3/4 closed
These are not current production, they were made for 1 or 2 distributors requesting them.

All models made in the USA.

Hope that helps

I got my 1745 NRG-II with grey Trac-Tek and Black Inserts for €$26,95 USD's. That's mighty fine knife (one the best knife deals in my life, was less than my Kershaw Skyline). Bit too long to carry in urban but works excellently in woods and such. The pneumatic flipper is really fast once you get to hand of it. And my knife doesn't have Bead Blast but looks to be satine finished.

Rubbery stippled polymer stuff. Skate stuff only went on blurs and ZT 0400's IIRC.

So the rubbery stippled trac-tec doesn't eat up your pants? Was thinking of picking one of these up, but more as an impulse buy than anything - don't much care for sacrificing my pants pockets :(

Eknifeworks.com had them for $20.

Good knife, BUT I found that the slightest bit of pocket lint would prevent it from opening fully, moreso than traditional lockbacks. I can put a Cold Steel Voyager or Vaquero in a pile of feathers and it would snap open without a hiccup. Something to be aware of.

Alright, well I think I'm going to grab one of these then. Thanks for the replies guys. 2brothers, you post was particularly helpful. I'm still wondering though, as was previously mentioned, how people's pockets and the newer, rubbery TracTec get along?
