Nrg

Regarding the opening mechanism, I have a few pics that may be of interest.

First things first, the knife shown is a Lee Williams custom with the "kick stop" opener. It is not my knife, I saved the pics when I saw them at another forum several months ago. Not having had a chance to handle either the custom or the NRG in person I have no first-hand experience to say that they share the exact same mechanism. However, from looking at images of both knives, and considering they are designed by the same man, it is my belief they're more alike than not as it relates to the flipper. If Thomas or anyone else from Kershaw feels this information should corrected or changed in any way, please do so.

Click on the thumbnails for a larger view if you wish.

First pic shows the knife closed and you can see the flipper tab.

Second pic shows the knife partially open and that the flipper tab is a separate piece from the blade itself.

Last pic shows the knife fully opened. The tab is rotated into the handle, sitting flush with the the liners and the back of the blade.

Thanks for the great pics...if this is the NRG's style once it hits the streets, I guess I'm out another 50 bucks or so...

I love that knife! That said, it may just be a heart breaker for the Canadian market. Under Canadian law, if there is a 'switch' in or on the handle of a knife, causing the blade to spring open, it may be considered a 'switch blade' and hence a prohibited weapon under Canadian law. Previous Kershaw AO knives were fine, as the lever was integral with the blade and not on the handle. I really hope that I am wrong about the above.

Well, the thing about the NRG and Canada is that the blade is not caused to "spring" open. There is no spring assist to the blade. The switch pushes the blade toward the open position but it opens entirely based on the force built up by your finger, no spring ever takes over to continue the opening motion. Hopefully that will be enough to let the knife be shipped into Canada.

Excellent! I thought it had a spring assist. In that case it should be OK, as long as it has a good ball detent. Canada Customs will try to flick folders open, so it can be classified as a gravity knife and subsequently seized. Great place, eh?

Came someone tell me the thickness of the locking liner on the NRG/NRG2? Hopefully it's on the stout side, like the JYD2.

I don't think its as thick as the JYD, due to the NRG being a smaller knife overall, but the liner lock is still thicker than the Leeks and Scallions.

DoW, good to hear from you. It looks like the smaller NRG will incorporate .050 liners, and the larger version .070.

Hi, Thomas! Good to hear from you, too.

I like those numbers. Based on the JYD2, I think the thicker .070" liner is really what a hand-filling knife in the 3.5"+ blade class needs -- essentially gives you the best of both frame lock and liner lock. But on a smaller knife, I think it could be overkill.

Looks like the forum is going very nicely, I'm assuming it's working out to be a nice complement to Kershaw's already excellent customer service.

Thomas, can you tell me how thick the liners are on the JYD2? I didn't see that listed on the website. Thanks!

any hope of an nrg with a different handle?
i'm getting a little burned out on the "g-10/trac-tec" thing.
how about a little fresh blood in the handle-designing department?

I like the titanium/charcoal finished G-10 myself, and we only do the inserts on the Storm's and Blur's.

What material did you have in mind?
