Don't lock your elbows, ie keep your arms bent, use your stomach muscles rather then resting all your weight on your arms. and as others have said relax, and no more death grips.

All the above info would be wise to follow.... BUT! I can remember the exact same thing happend to me the first week on my GSX-R,so just relax,stay away from heavy traffic for a bit. This is natural. If you didnt get some sort of numbness or soreness I'm the kinda guy who would say THATS when you need to go see a doc, cuz youre not normal. No stunts, that bike looks plenty cool going slow,always wear some gloves. I can give you plenty of advice but just be safe, know that those bikes go really fast,faster then any car and you dont know how fast till you check out your speedo.
You say that it is your left hand. Are you wearing a heavy watch?
I went on a multi-thousand mile ride and at the end of the day I couldn't grip anything in my left hand. I finally took my watch off and that night I was as good as new.
thanks for all the advise everyone! i'm so glad to hear that there are so many experienced riders in here. cruising around in this ride these past few days has really been a trip.
i tried easing up on my grip more, and it helped significantly. my left hand isn't completely numb like it used to be, although there is still a bit of residual discomfort that lasts for a while after i get off my bike. it's getting better.
i'll try out different riding postitions to see what feels most comfortable. i haven't taken this bike out for any extended periods of time-- only 10-20 miles commutes.
no stunts for me, no tricks. and i'm not wearing a "heavy" watch-- it's a hamilton khaki navy not dissimilar from this one:
but i'll start taking my watch off and keeping it in my pocket.
