I've heard they they are collector stamps or something, but I'm curious about how you get one like that. Anyone know?

Josh,
You would have to join our Collector's Club or purchase a knife from one of the members of our Collector's Club.

 Spyderco Collector's Club? It exists? I didn't know?

Exactly how would one go about signing up? :)

Maybe This website from The Deacon (Paul) will help to get started to see what it's all about. Follow the links "Spyderco Collecting FAQ" and there "What Do The Numbers On Some Spyderco Knives Mean?" to get a first impression.

If you wanna join the club, prepare to pay some serious amount of money for quite a few knives.... Spyderco isn't lazy when it comes to releasing new models :)
AFAIK, It is possible to refuse to buy certain models if you chose the right dealer (New Graham knives could be one of them), but then whats the point anyway :) and if you want to be delivered early with new models, time has shown that you should just buy normally. Numbered models nowadays appear later than regular ones.

Dennis

P.S.: To join, you would simply give them a call and go from there, I guess.

Ah. Buying ever new model might put a strain on my current finances. It's a nice thought for later in life though.

Thanks all for the information. :)

For the record, NGK has been forced to stop doing that. Too many people passing on too many knives.

I think quite a few folks, both inside and outside the Collectors Club wish Spyderco would rethink and restructure it. I'd bet a system where one was notified that "model X" or "variant Y" was due out within the next "X" months and given the choice of receiving it, or not, would attract a lot more interest than the current setup. There could be a requirement that a minimum number had to be purchased each year in order to remain in the club. A dozen would seem to be a reasonable number.

Yes, it would mean more work at Spyderco's end, but in this day of computerized inventories and commuinications, it should not really be all that difficult. One thing is certain, the current system is definitely "broken".

One of the two major incentives for membership, being "the first kid on your block" to get a given model, has effectively been removed. That actually was two benefits rolled into one. The thrill of being first was one, but perhaps more importantly for those in club, it guaranteed a market for even the least popular releases if a member wanted/needed to sell the knife immediately upon receipt because he could not afford to keep it.

The other membership benefit, guaranteed delivery of "hot" Sprint Runs and limited editions, has only ever been available to all variant members, a category that in the past few years has become incredibly expensive due to the seemingly ever increasing number of variants.

Some call me a hard core collector and I think that's true :jerkit: But for the reasons Paul mentioned I never waste a thought to join the CC from Spyderco. As always just my 0,002 €-cents ;)

Thank you for the comment, Paul.
The collerctors club was kinda miracle to me ever since; Paul summarized it quite well as always.

There HAS to be some advantage to be in this club in the first place, i.e. to be under the first 200 to get a new knife; not the case any more (in fact, you will have to wait for MONTHS to get a new model anyone else already owns).

I like the idea of a collectors club. It just really needs some refreshment.

Well, buying every new model, while I would enjoy it very much, my bank account would probably vomit blood and die.

I personally understand the "you are committed to buying every model" as it keeps the structure in place, and you have a guaranteed market for new releases. However, I've been reading that you may end up waiting to get your knife, instead of getting it first. That and an option to buy into new sprint runs.

For people considering the "new models only" membership plan another major deterrent is the logic by which Spyderco selects the base version of each new model.

Spyderco still insists on selecting the serrated version, or in the absence of that, the combo edge version, over the plain. Plain only gets chosen when it is the only edge Spyderco intends to produce. I can understand Spyderco considering serrations as one of their trademark features, but very few collectors share their enthusiasm. That is proven every day on eBay, where the PE version of any Spyderco model available that way will fetch higher prices than the SE and CE versions, even on models where PE is the most common version.

Granted, this has not been as big an issue as it once was. Can't recall the last new collaboration model that had a "toothy" version and even a few of the newer "in house" designs, like the Sage, have been PE only. However, it is still a deterrent.
