NWG Belt Speed

I have a quick question for the group.

I am building the NWG grinder right now.
However the motor I got is 3450 rpm instead of the 1750 suggested.
I understand that I can use stepper pulleys to get the speed to change.

But what belt speed (SFPM) should I be aiming for.

Min ?
Max ?
Avg ?

Based on the formula in the plans my speeds with 5-4-3-2 stepper setup will range from ~1400 - ~9000. The latter seems a bit fast to me.

Later on I will look into a variable speed motor. But right now I just want to get up and running.

With a 1750 rpm motor and the 4 step pulleys the high end speed is scary fast. I have it figured at 4579 SFPM
By my math I have the belts moving at
4579
2442
1347
732
I find the slower speeds to be the most useful

My grinder runs at either 2700 or 1450 sfpm. the 2700 is probably a good target for pretty much anything you want to do, give or take a couple hundred. At 1450, I rarely get any sparks off the metal, just a pile of steel wool shavings. 5000+ sfpm belt speeds, in my observations, heat the metal too rapidly and causes AlOx belts to degrade rapidly as well.

Five thousand sfm is an optimal speed if your going to be using ceramic belts. Pressure and speed is what is needed to get the full benifit from them.

I run a 3HP motor with 5400 sfm on the top end and 1400 on the low end.

I use 1725 for grinding blades ect.and about 720 for grinding TI and things of that nature.dont grind titanium fast enough to see sparks!!occasionally its ok,but slow speeds are best!
