Ordered the No Weld Grinder plans this week. Hope to get started on construction next week. Can't say it will be entirely weld free once it's done. ;) I'll try to post some pics of the construction as I go.

Would love to see pics as you go along. If you have the ability to weld, I think there are a few spots on the NWG that can benefit from it ;)

I'm definitely interested in seeing your progress on the NWG. I "think" I am down to choosing between the NWG and the GIB.

I'm torn too.

NWG frame for me would cost about $150. KMG clone at $200. GIB at $250. Optionsoptionsoptions...

Hi Friends,

Since Salem Straub visited me I got inspired to rally on building the NWG that I started to round parts up for a few years back. :o The GIB option did not exist when I started. If I were starting now, and I had the money, and I was doing direct drive...I would most likely go the GIB route. That being said, I'm still content enough doing the NWG. Maybe we can help each other out with, and post picks of, our builds as we go along?

All the best, Phil

Phil, that sounds great! With any luck, I'll get some pics on here next week. Thanks!

Just wanted to provide an update: Plans arrived. Metal was cut and picked up today. Pulleys, wheels and other various parts have been ordered. Should be able to start assembly in a few days. I'll start a new thread with progress pics as soon as I can.

All for now,

If you build well and carefully, you'll have a great, and very versatile machine that can grind out blades with the best of them. I've made a few mods to mine over the years I've had mine to improve the machine as originally spec'd. One of those mods I made a video on:

Other recommendations I have, if you haven't already purchased them:

Get the precision turned/milled drive shaft from KMG/UsaKnifemaker, instead of a typical cold rolled shaft. Overtime, my original shaft developed wobble and started bending, increasing vibration considerably.

Get a Fenner linked belt instead of a standard v belt. This really smooths vibration as well.

Get a rubber faced drive wheel, as this will improve tracking (I will eventually).

If you weld, this will be moot, but I used thicker straps to fix my sockets and arms to my machine, as well as a thicker base tube. This isn't necessary, but it does add a bit more mass and strengthens the overall machine. Tracy recommends 1/8" x 1" straps, I believe I used 3/16" straps.

If you're on a budget, eyebolts and/or bolts bent at a 90 work well for knobs.

For my flat platen, I copied the KMG design and fabricated one that I could remove so I'd have a slack belt/flat platen all in one. I also lined my plated with ceramic glass.

Lastly, I used the biggest spring I could find and used a 1/2" bolt on the rear of the tracking arm to hold the spring. The plans call for 3/8", but I noticed mine started to bend and I wasn't getting as much tenstion on my belts.
