Hello, I recently purchased my first CRK, a Nyala. I was wondering if the handle slabs should be removed? I plan on using it as a hunting knife and I know it will need a good cleaning after field dressing. Thanks for your time.

The scales are glued on as well as having screws so you're probably best not trying to get them off.

Thanks, that is what i wanted to know. If there glued i don't have to worry about rust under the slabs.

Man that stinks. i was just about to buy a Nyala. I wanted to be able to take the scales off so it can be washed THOUROUGHLY.
I have a couple of restaurant and was wanting one to use for food prep and utility. For me there must be ZERO cracks and crevices for food or liquids to get caught in that would cause bacteria.

You could always give the thing a CA coat. Because it's micarta, you shouldn't have issue disinfecting it with a 1:1 bleach soak.

What's a CA coat?
I'm not worried about disinfecting but worried about particles that get stuck in the cracks and eventually under the scale.

I'm not sure how far the glue extends, I would suspect it fully covers the metal / micarta union.

CA = Superglue.

On my Nyala there is actually quite an obvious gap between the sclaes and tang. It's a bit tricky to get a good picture but you can still see the gap running under the scale.

I'm puzzled, not trying to argue :) - don't most knives have at least small gaps between the tang and the scales?

No. If any of my kitchen knives do they are so so small that you can not see or feel gaps. My kitchen knives are pretty nice and most are solid handles. Most but not all.

If you want a kitchen specific knife why not use something like the Sikayo?

Because it won't be only a kitchen knife. It will be used as a utility knife as well. Such as cutting boxes down and other work that is needed. I do not want to have to carry or search for a knife that is specific for each task. And carry my Sebenza too. I was just hoping to get a knife that can be used as an all around knife and the Nyala is perfect IF the scales could be removed

Michael, I would think a quick call to CRK could arrange for a Nyala to be pulled out of line BEFORE the handles were put in place, ala special order. No?

I don't know. A couple of my special request have been turned down in the past.I can't remember what those request were but remember being disappointed.
I'll give them a call though.

I called CRK and spoke with Jessie. i have never spoken with her before but I have to say Chris has another great person over there. She was very helpful and sensitive to my needs and concerns. She spoke with Mr. Reeve and he wants to speak with me directly on the issuer. So I will call later and do that.
One thing Mr. Reeve told Jessie and I already knew is that bleach should NEVER be used to clean these knives. I sanitize equipments and tools all of the time with bleach/water solutions and I know first hand what bleach could do to the Nyala.
To be continued.
Sorry Trout if we took over your thread but hopefully the info is helping you in your situation.

No apology necessary, I have learned a bit. My concern is rust forming under the scales from me soaking the knife to clean it. Fat and guts from field dressing animals is hard to get off a knife.

That is exactly right. That is a big concern for me too. This knife could serve many many many purposes for me.
