NYC knife laws: unconstitutional

i was speaking with a local knife dealer who was going of buisness. for those of you who live in the NYC area, yes, its "treasures" on 86th Street. he will be opening in a new area in the coming months. while chatting with him about knife laws, he had told me that there is a new police policy to arrest anyone with ANY pocket knife. now, not even getting into the whole second ammendment thing, can someone please tell me why? there are more shootings then stabbings, and whenever there is a stabbing (and this issue is what truly pisses me off) its with a box cutter. the actual number of crimes commited with an actual pocket knife are relatively low. so why all the restrictions? when was the last time someoen was stabbed with a "gravity" knife? i cant carry an axis locking knife, because of how vague that law alone is. i had also recently heard of Knife Rights doing something about it, but havent heard anything about it in the last 5-6 months. on a side note, does anyone know whether the laws will change when bloomberg is out? i cant even begin to describe how much i dislike him, mostly based on the fact that he decided to innact a third term for mayor without asking the people who live here, and still puts major restrictions on just about everything. anyone who lives here can probably relate it to a totalitarian state. when there was the 9/11, 10th anniversary, there was a bomb scare in the city, and they knew it (at the time) it had something to do with 3 missing trucks. so what did they do? the nypd decided to set up hundreds of police checkpoints throughout the city. thats fine, but pulling random innoceny people over and frisking them isent. bloomberg has more then once gone against what the people want, to make money for the city. and its never been enough. we have to pay out the nose just to park on our own city streets that WE payed for!!!) , and on top of that, put up with pointless laws and restrictions, police that are given too much power, a mayor that makes dicisions without the consent of its people, and worst of all, there are police policys in place to process people, even if the officer isent sure hes arrested them for commiting a crime (I.E. the officer arrests someone for carrying something legal on accident). the pure fact alone that we cant carry a knife for self defense goes against our second ammendment right. and anyone who lives here KNOWS that its impossible to get a CCW to carry a gun, and pepperspray, stunguns, knives are out. so what else do we have to protect ourselves? im not trying to go on a rant here, i started typing this just to ask the question, "does anyone know when our knife laws will change?". so ill ask it.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHEN NYC KNIFE LAWS WILL CHANGE??

Hey, take it easy, you can carry pepperspray in NYC. Combine that with a flashlight and a rape whistle and that's all a law-abiding citizen needs in the well-ordered and virtually crime-free NYC metro area.

NYC will start respecting individual rights of the lower classes right after the Rapture. Not even a zombie apocalypse would do it.

For 37 bucks an hour you can hire cops through the administration's "Paid Detail" program. I imagine if you were holding the purse strings they'd not only look the other way, they'd shake down anybody that screws with you too. Then if you needed a knife you could borrow one of theirs.

What do you mean it's impossible to get a CCW in New York? They're issued all the time. To gangsters and the wealthy...

Seriously though, do you have anything other than this guy's assertion of this new policy to arrest persons with "ANY" knife. From what I've read on knife rights.org, it's only regarding one hand and assisted opening. Which they have a lawsuit about. I'm not defending it, I'm just curious about the facts here.

it does explain the story i heard about a group of construction workers arrested for having multi tools.

Bloomberg isn't the prime mover behind the knife law travesty, although you can bet it's fine by him. The Manhattan District Attorney is the problem. Wikipedia:

Cyrus Roberts Vance, Jr. (born June 14, 1954) is an American trial lawyer. He is the incumbent New York County District Attorney (Manhattan), and was previously a principal at the law firm of Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Isaon, Anello & Bohrer, P.C. He is the son of Cyrus Vance, former Secretary of State to President Jimmy Carter.

There's also the recent arrest of an electrician between his truck and the apt bldg he was working on. The law specifically states you may display a knife if being used for a lawful purpose. Hanging in a tool belt worn by a licensed electrician should be good enough. Technically you should be able to pull out a non-locking sub 4" knife to cut up an apple while sitting on a park bench, but try it and see. Individuals have no rights in NYC that are not at the discretion of the police and local govt. Arrest first, release later, drop charges if you put up enough of a stink, sweep complaint under rug, repeat.

Here we go again, people trying to use common sense in a city run by (fill in your own blank).

Bloomberg promotes rampant gun control laws- yet he has a city with one the most shootings? Does that make any sense?
Any fool knows that criminals dont abide by the law, so why put a restriction on honest tax paying americans? Somebody should ask Blommie, and BTW he DOES have a handgun permit, but YOU cant.....and you better not carry a knife either. Glad I live outside that hellhole

DAMN! beat me too it. i was just about to say something about him. for all the good cyrus vance jr has done for this city. for the all the criminals he took off the streets, i want ot ask him why he is having innocent tax paying citizens thrown in jail with them for simply carrying a pocket knife. i would bet good money hes got a MASSIVE knife collection. lol. but seriously though, has he ever said why hes doing it? i garuntee when knife laws get as strict as he can make them, hes going after screwdrivers and scissors.

I work in LE not too far north of NYC. What kills me is criminals don't register illegal hand guns nor do they pay taxes on stolen money or drug sales, so what makes anyone think they are any safer or better off just because of tough knife laws. Honest people don't commit crimes, criminals do! I know I can and do carry my firearm when I travel to NYC. As well, I always leave my knife with the exposed clip sticking out of my pocket. I will try and just stuff it in my pocket so I don't get bothered by anyone though.

I don't know about the who concealment issue but I am pissed my favorite store in NYC no longer carries Chris Reeve!

I think he has three more years till re election. Remember the law has been on the books since 1958 for swicthblades and gravity knives and the exposed city law since 1989...it is the way the NYPD is enofcing now that has caused the issue along with the Manhattan DA's way of handling these arrests and going after the dealers himself. Elimate the required number of arrests for NYPD officers ( yes there is a quota), and the system that rewards the number of arrests an officer makes to get in special units and the OT arrests, and then the NYPD will go back to being a fair enforcement agency. Knife arrests are considered a good arrests by many commands these days in NYC....

i seriously want to know how they can call it the criminal justice system when there are a required number of arrests. i think "possible criminal conviction system" is more accurate. and like law1173 said. these laws dont make anyone safer. quite the contrary actually, it makes us Less-safe then if we dident have them. im seriously hoping knife rights does something about this. its really upsetting me and alot of other people. if it werent for sheeple who are to afraid to look past the're own nose on the matter (even the matter relating to handguns) then it would be a much safer city. i recently told someone the fact that brooklyn averages twice the violent crimes as canada every year. and they brush it off as "but thats canada" as if canada has a smaller population then brooklyn.

A gent named Jefferson made this point a couple hundred years ago.

They say religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich.

Sounds like the rich are losing their faith in the poor.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg with a net worth of $19.5 billion in 2011 is the 12th-richest person in the United States.

Interesting that he was a lifelong democrat before running for mayor as a republican.

Explains a lot though doesn't it ?

I sell on the auctions sites. after they started there new knife laws I put in my adds I will not ship to new york state. I dont have the money to fight them.
