I just want to know the ins and the outs of the knife laws in New York City. It's pretty strict out here so I want to know if you guys have any recommendations for a good edc knife. More importantly can you guys give me an in depth breakdown of the restrictions and legality issues. This is my first post on BladeForums so all the help I can get is much appreciated.

The safest course of action is to simply avoid New York entirely if at all possible. Even if something is technically legal there, in practice it really isn't.

Spyderco spy dk or viper Dan 2, and don't clip to pocket, keep inside pocket or in waistband. Never say it's for self defense or protection. It's a "utility knife" and don't look like a hoodlum if your found with a knife. If you break the law and have a knife on you... Your F***ed. Best case they take it away. I live in Nyc and carry a knife every single day, and not necessarily an Nyc legal knife. Keep it out of sight, including the pocket clip, and you should be fine. Any knife that can be flicked opened is an arrestible offense, but will most likely be dropped in court, unless of course you are carrying an auto, balisong or something that looks menacing

What about putting a knife on a paracord lanyard, not a braided one, and secure the other end of the lanyard to a belt loop if you have them, and carry the knife down your pants?

In practice:
-If it folds and locks, you will go to jail.
-If they can see it, you will be harassed.
-If it can be opened one handed at all and you are harassed, you might go to jail.
-Under 4" fixed blades are OK as long as they are totally concealed. In practice, they will still get you harassed if their presence is detected.

the laws are in a grey area on purpose in nyc. also racial profiling can play apart. take me for example, scrubs, in my pocket is a GEC 15 boys knife, or some traditional on most days. Hidden, and no intent displayed. blade is closed at all times and not taken out

Guy in California got pinched for the same thing, there's a thread in here on it. I think the Prosecutor translated open SAK = Dagger.

Not to mention that getting arrested in NYC means experiencing facilities like Manhattan Central Booking aka "The Tombs" (it's underground) and Rikers Island ... all destinations one would rather avoid. Rikers is especially bad...it's valuable to be adept in showering while seated there...not to mention the constant fights and stabbings. In short, don't carry a knife in NYC.

I carry a knife every day in Nyc. In my car ashtray stays a spyderco spy dk. Theoretically is perfectly legal as long as not brandished as a weapon, and it's fully capable as an Edc. In my emergency pack in the trunk is a esee izula, also perfectly legal if not brandished. And loose in my pocket or clipped in waistband is my Edc folder. That's the one you don't want to be visible, especially if it locks or can be flicked open. As long as you don't look the part, you should be fine. It helps to have a friend or family member on the force, or at least a pba card, and a good reason for carrying. There's always the chance that you get that aHole cop that determines your SAK is carried for self defense.

Or be like Linda Reagan and carry a family photo from vacation of you with your father in law, the commissioner, when applying for a carry license.

I can't cite where, but I remember reading about how California has classified tent stakes as being daggers for the purpose of prosecutions.

I just got back from my first and last visit to NYC.
I just kept mine in the room. Don't take a chance in that city.
