NYC Legality question

the UKPK is legal in NYC it dosn't have a blade over 4 inches long.. and it dosn;t have a lock.. its legal..

Go slipjoint or fixed bladed (concealed and under 4").

Wait, so there is concealed fixed blade carry of less than 4 inches in NYC? Just wanted to make sure because this is pretty ironic considering how strict their laws are already.

While it should be legal, it may be considered a "dangerous knife".
The law in NY uses the catch all phrase "dangerous knife" meaning your possession of any knife is presumptive evidence that you intend to use the knife unlawfully against another individual.

265.15 Presumptions of possession, unlawful intent and defacement.

4. ... The possession by any person of any dagger, dirk, stiletto, dangerous knife or any other weapon, instrument, appliance or substance designed, made or adapted for use primarily as a weapon, is presumptive evidence of intent to use the same unlawfully against another.

This is making my head spin,,they write those laws to make it hard to understand...im in suffolk,,why cant i find in english,,,folder blade legal length,,nyc is under "4,,,what about in suffolk,,,and legal fixed blade,,,,concealed?

thanks

There is no length limit in suffolk. That being said use common sense. I carry a 3.5" every day to open stuff at work mostly but not an hour ago gave it to my Father so he could open his birthday present. And that's what I would tell a cop if I got stopped. It's going to be harder to explain that about a 6" fixed blade.

well i do carry my izula randomly,,as its a very ez to carry fixed blade and you dont even know its on you because its so light....Where does it,"the law" state there is no limit? i would not carry a 6" especially in the open

There is no law stating "no limit". You will not find a law telling you what you CAN do! NYC has a 4" limit, but the state does not have a defined limit written in the law.

Nyc is tough for lots of weapons.
Maybe if they leveled the playing field and allowed people to have weapons, crime would decrease.

I live in Suffolk, I have not found any local laws regarding knife possession in Suffolk. Only the state laws.

But unfortunately the interpretation of the "gravity knife" is starting to migrate to Long Island. Its already started in Nassau.

But use common sense. Don't strap a 15" survival knife on your leg and go for a stroll around town. That might work upstate, but not in Suffolk. Keep it small, and keep it tucked away.

There are alot of Nassau and Suffolk cops that started in NYPD first where they learned the STATE law about gravity knives as the NYPD reads it. They spread that belief to their fellow officers and there you go. I told this story about a teen arrested at the Broaday Mall in Central Nassau county a couple of years back when it first happen. The one officer flicked open the kids knife and cuffed him, and said to his partner he was charging him with a grvaity knife. His partner seemed to not agree, but the kid was taken away on the back seat ride....

NYC (as well as several other states) consider balisongs to be switchblades FYI ...Though it rarely deters me from rotating in my mayhem :) But there are several great folders that CANNOT be opened by centrifugal force; you may like to try one of them. My most common EDC is a Chris Reeve small Insingo. The blade length is 2.95" there is tension keeping the blade in place so it can only be thumb-flicked (not centrifugal force), and its great for all my cutting tasks. Most carried blade i own.. But youll be happy t know that knife rights currently has a class-action (i believe) against new york city to alter their mehtods of determining legailty. Knife rights for the win!

I'm in NYC. Out of what's been said, most of it is pretty spot on. Best way to avoid trouble is a non locking folder with a nice strong detent or a small fixed blade. I carry my Izula concealed either in my pocket or on my belt under my shirt/jacket or whatever will adequately cover it. The real "danger zone" IMO is Manhattan. If you're in any other area thats more suburban, you should be fine. I've never had any issues and literally have a blade on me at all times.

The knives in question in NYC can't be opened by centrifugal force. They are liner locks that are "thumb-flicked". The DA in NYC has considered these liner locks as being able to be "flicked" open by "centrifugal force", and hence are "gravity knives". Anybody with half a brain can tell this isn't true, except for the NYC DA.

As for the law suit with Knife Rights: IMO its a really shaky suit, but even worse it could backfire big time.
