ThreeWorlds, hook up with one of the BFC guys, tell him what you like and then go on a tour. He'll show you his favorites and what he looks for in a knife. If he knows some makers he'll introduce you, knifemakers are easy to get to know. If you show an interest in their work, even if you don't buy first time around, there's a good chance you just made a friend.
First time around just try to take in everything and I do mean everything. This is your chance to see and learn a lot, and more important to get your hands on. I always ask before I pick up any knife. I want them to see me pick it up and put it back down just like I found it. Don't flick open any knife, it's really bad form. If you know you're just looking don't get between the maker and a serious customer, be patient, or come back later.
After the first tour you're going to be in overload, but certain pieces will stand out in your mind. Time for a second look. If the knife that you liked 10 minutes ago is now sold, okay you missed out, but you may have good taste. Make sure to get the makers business card, ask him about technique, materials and options. DO NOT ask, "How long did it take you to make this knife?" or "How come sooooooo much?"
Hopefully by this time you've met a couple fo the BFC regulars and can see a
Show & Tell. Explain what you've seen and what you like, and maybe they'll be able to show you some comparables, (similar stuff, maybe at a better price).
My first couple of shows I had the advantage of a serious knife collector for over 30 years, that walked me throught the show. I could look at a knife through his eyes and I learned a ton. He also introduced me to everyone. I try every chance I get to pass that on.
My first knife show was NYCKS 1998. I bought two Spyderco's, but I've been to shows where I bought nothing. I met a lot of people my first show and I've never been to a show that there wasn't friends I could visit with and talk knives. I've never been to a bad show. I hope your first show is great, if it's not, you did something wrong.
