O-1, A-2, D-2, 5160, 1095, CMP 3V/4V? What kind of steel should I be using?

Go with CTS-XHP the edge holding is excellent while still tough enough be made as camp with corrosion resistance as a big bonus.


All you need is just send it to Peters Heat treat.
 
For what its worth 1084/1095 great for protos and templates for us beginners. Nice and affordable so you can practice, practice and practice. You can HT, hamon, quench, temper and so on. When you have the grind and your fire right move on to stainless.
Keep in mind I'm still in 'practice mode' myself but just starting to play with stainless... cryo and plates. Such a great hobby but be prepared to buy tools and then more tools and a few after that. Did I mention belts? :)
