Hi guys,
I have been grinding on a large piece of O-1 to make a knife. The size is 3/16" X 18" x 2 1/4". All I hace done is profile the blade and handle area and taken a starting cut on one side of the cutting edge. Twice now I have noticed that the blade seems to warp on both the long length and on the smaller length. I straightened it on a press the first time. It seems to curl. Has anybody noticed this before? Am I grinding too much between cooling? I am grinding barehand and have not felt any over heating. The O-1 is from Starrett,
Thanks for the help.

Try grinding alternately on each side and see if that resolves the problem. You are relieving stresses in one side and possibly adding to them on the other. I think...

Also, be aware that you can literally bend a piece of steel while grinding by pressing too hard against the wheel or platen.

Gene, it could be that. But I first noticed it when I had just profiled the blade.
Fitzo, I am trying to just hold the blade against the wheel or platten( I have put it against both, and a small wheel adapter that really moves at a slow sfpm.) I try to let the belt do the work most of the time, but I might be pushing too hard.
Thanks for your answers. I will work some more on the blade tomorrow.
regards,
Fred

AcridSaint,
I will watch myself and be sure not to put too much pressure on the blade.
Later today I will set my grinder for my 8" wheel again, and try again.
Thanks for the help guys.
