This latest knife is a sort of tribute to fellow BF member and knife maker Matthew Gregory. He recently banged out a few small hunters that inspired me to try something a little different than my signature hunting knife. This knife is smaller, and probably better sized to small game processing, including white tail deer. As many of us know, it's not always ideal to have a larger-than-necessary blade doing delicate cutting. 3" blades are quite capable, and often preferred.

The blade steel on this knife is one of my favorite carbon steels, 1.2442 (O-7 series), sourced from Achim Wirtz in Germany. This particular batch of 1.2442 has about 2% Tungsten, and could be dubbed "Deutsche Blaues Papier 1.5". It is very close in composition to the renowned Hitachi Blue # 1. Hardened and tempered for a final hardness of ~62HRC. It has a very thin grind for slicing performance as well. I have a good process nailed down that allows me to thin the edge without worrying about overheating during grinding. All sharpening was done by hand using diamond plates with this wear resistant steel to ensure carbide shaping.

Handle is Blaze Orange G10 (the pics wash out the brightness of the orange slightly), which is nice to have when you've set the blade on the ground, and try to find it later! I like the orange myself. Edges rounded for comfort. SS pins.

OAL: 7 1/4""
Blade: 3 1/4"
Handle: 4"
Thickness: 0.105", tapered to tip
Edge: 30° inclusive (15° per side) EEF DiaSharp

This is a lot cleaner than the ones I made, I think, and there are a handful of details on your iteration that I like more than my own, too. Not sure how much is ‘mine’, as this is such a straightforward profile, I’m sure we’re both following in the footsteps of loads of others...

I own two of Stuart’s knives, and both have superb fit and finish, and demonstrate an attention to the important aspects (heat treatment, geometry) that I don’t see in most other makers, new or old. I’m glad to be able to call him a friend.

His pricing on this knife is offensively low. It should be at least double, but that’s my own take on it, I guess. Someone will undoubtedly be happy.
