Bought this inexpensive Indian made Khyber knife from N2S. It had absolutely no edge and the fit/finish was pretty poor. But we both knew that underneath, there was a solid knife. He kindly sold it to me for a pittance, and I've spent a few hours in the shop with it. The steel seems pretty good, guessing that the Rc is about 54-56. It's not a khukuri, but I'ts a pretty neat knife. Thanks N2S.

Oh I forgot to add. It's 25" Overall length, blade is 18" x 2", and it weighs 2 lbs.-4 oz.

Yes, it's a modern piece. Made by one of those Indian factories that tun out Khukuris and reproduction blades.

Steve,

That looks good. I am glad to hear that you were able to put a good edge on.

a Windlass Steelcrafts piece, or the Atlanta Cutlery piece, or Museum Replicas (same company).

Windlass/AC/MRI are held by the same folks.

I have 2 Atlanta Cutlery khybers now ( bought one and was given the other ), and though not that well made, they'll do for most purposes. The RC hardness sounds about right.

No comparison with the honest to goodness real thing khyber sword Sarge sent me from
Afghanistan, but what the heck, I don't think they're a bad deal for the price.

That's a nice Khyber knife. I was just thinking of Khybers, since I got one in high school, about the same time I got my first khukuri. I was wondering what one made by the HI kamis would look like. I've always liked the design.

I've been pondering over that same thing. I think I got it already when buying my Bura Tibetan Short Sword. Same blade shape minus the T spine, an 8" handle, and 23 1/2" blade. 31" OAL.

True khyber knives are much lighter then anything normally produced by HI. The blade width runs around 1/8" with a 1/4 "T" at the spine. That could be a problem for someone accustom to heat treating 1/2" thick blades.

You know, you're right. I thought the small Tibetan swords had the clip point like the larger model, but they don't. I'm gonna have to get me one of those.

Very nice finished product. What work was necessary regarding the fit/finish issue? Did you do any additional grinding or filling on the handle material?

The tang was rough ground unevenly. The horn slabs had file marks, and there were gaps between the horn and tang. A little superglue for the gaps, filing and grinding on the tang and plenty of sanding/polishing of the grips and it revealed it's true beauty. It wasn't a bad knife, just typical of the stuff you get from Windlass. The blade was actually pretty well finished. Nice polish. No edge, as most of these are probably sold for wall hangers. Great classic design and a very solid knife underneath.

Checked real Kyber against Tibetan Short sword, definite edge to khyber in lightened weight. Did not check against AC khyber which by recollection was significantly heavier.
